Estirando las alas. Asociado a una bandada mixta de ostreros pardos (Haematopus palliatus) y ostreros australes (Haematopus leucopodus). Presenta coloración intermedia entre el ostrero pardo y el ostrero negro. En vuelo espejo alar similar al ostrero negro.
