Description


This medium-sized Neotropical bird is characterized by a robust silhouette and a compact build, measuring between 20 and 22 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 48 to 64 grams. Its most prominent diagnostic feature is a striking semi-circular white patch on the sides of the neck, bordered posteriorly by a dark blackish collar. It possesses a heavy, stout bill, slightly hooked at the tip, showing a vibrant bright orange-red coloration with a darker tip. The dorsal plumage exhibits a cryptic, brown and rufous barred pattern, while the underparts are mainly whitish with fine vertical dark streaks. Its eyes display a distinctive red or reddish-brown iris, surrounded by a narrow ring of bare yellowish skin.

Geographical distribution: The geographic range of this species extends across central and eastern regions of South America. It is widely distributed throughout most of Brazil (from the southern fringes of the Amazon basin to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Bolivia, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, particularly in the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, and Chaco.

Habitat: It is primarily associated with open and semi-open habitats. It is highly abundant in the Cerrado savanna and the dry shrublands of the Caatinga, but it also frequents forest edges, clearing areas within humid forests, wooded pastures, savannah-like scrub, and secondary growth forests. It generally avoids dense, unbroken canopy forests.

Feeding: The diet is strictly carnivorous and insectivorous, consisting of a diverse array of invertebrates and small vertebrates. Its prey includes beetles, grasshoppers, cicadas, caterpillars, and spiders, along with small lizards, frogs, rodents, and occasionally small birds or eggs. It employs a classic sit-and-wait hunting strategy, sitting motionlessly on high perches before sallying forth in rapid, direct flights to seize prey from the ground or foliage.

Behavior: Known for its remarkably placid and seemingly lethargic nature, this bird often remains undisturbed by the close approach of humans. It spends extended periods perched silently on fence posts, telephone wires, or exposed branches. Its vocalizations are highly characteristic, consisting of a melancholic, rhythmic series of whistled notes, frequently performed as a synchronized duet by pairs during dawn and dusk.

Nesting: The breeding season typically occurs during the austral spring and summer. The pair constructs a nest by excavating a subterranean tunnel in dirt banks, ravines, slopes along roadsides, inactive termite mounds, or even on flat, sandy ground. These burrows can measure between 0.8 and 1.5 meters in length, ending in a nesting chamber lined with dry leaves and twigs. The clutch consists of 2 to 4 pure white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately 20 days.

Conservation status: This species is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The population maintains a stable trend, benefitting from its ecological plasticity and its ability to adapt to human-modified landscapes, degraded pastures, and forest edges.
