Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Features a slender and highly adapted body plan suitable for navigating dense thorny scrublands, measuring approximately 14 to 15 centimeters in total length. Its plumage is characterized by predominantly sandy-brown and grayish tones on the upperparts, which provide excellent camouflage in its arid environments. A prominent rufous or cinnamon-colored wing patch on the wing coverts and the bases of the flight feathers is highly diagnostic, especially visible when the bird is in flight. The throat displays a whitish color with faint grayish mottling, which transitions into a pale grayish-buff chest and belly. The most defining feature of this taxon is its slender, straight, and sharp bill, dark gray to blackish in color, uniquely adapted for probing tight crevices. It possesses a long, graduated tail with dark brown central feathers, while the outer rectrices are distinctly edged with bright rufous.

Geographical distribution: Occurs endemically in the southern cone of South America, with a breeding range restricted primarily to central and southern Argentina (Patagonia) and central Chile. During the austral winter, this taxon undergoes latitudinal migratory movements toward the north, reaching parts of northern Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and the extreme southern reaches of Brazil in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, escaping the harsh winter conditions of its southern breeding grounds.

Habitat: Inhabits arid and semi-arid scrublands associated with the Patagonian steppe, dry monte, and prepuna slopes. It shows a strong preference for open country featuring scattered, low-growing woody vegetation, particularly areas dominated by shrubs of the genera Larrea and Chuquiraga, as well as bunchgrasses belonging to the genus Stipa. Its altitudinal range spans from sea level in coastal areas and wintering grounds up to elevations exceeding 2,500 meters above sea level along the Andean slopes during the breeding season.

Feeding: Its diet is strictly insectivorous, consisting of a wide variety of terrestrial arthropods, including beetles, ants, bugs, caterpillars, and small spiders. It may occasionally supplement its diet with small grass seeds during periods of low insect abundance. It obtains its food primarily through active foraging on the ground or by agilely hopping through the inner branches of thorny bushes, gleaning prey from bark and leaf litter using its sharp bill.

Behavior: Exhibits primarily terrestrial and cryptic habits, scurrying quickly through low vegetation and across open ground in short, rapid runs. It has a characteristic habit of cocking its long tail upward at a steep angle while moving or when alert. Although typically secretive and difficult to observe, males become highly conspicuous during the breeding season when they perch on the topmost twigs of bushes to deliver their song, which consists of a rapid, high-pitched, descending trill. It is generally encountered singly or in well-established territorial pairs.

Nesting: The breeding biology of this taxon involves the construction of remarkably large structures relative to its body size. It builds a bulky, globular, or oval nest composed of interwoven thorny twigs, designed to deter terrestrial and aerial predators. These nests are typically positioned at low heights, ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters above the ground, deep within dense, thorny shrubs. The nest features a narrow lateral entrance chamber that leads to an inner nursery lined with feathers, mammal hair, and soft plant down. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 4 dull white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately two weeks.

Conservation status: Listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although local populations face localized threats from habitat degradation caused by extensive sheep and goat overgrazing, as well as desertification processes within the Patagonian steppe, its global population is considered stable and its extensive range does not approach the thresholds for a vulnerable status.
