Dear Cayetano Bernardo,
In this extraordinary and difficult time of COVID-19, I want to thank you, our supporters in conservation, for what you have done and what we have accomplished together in the past. The last few weeks have again demonstrated the interconnectedness of life on our planet and our dependence upon it for our health and well-being.
There are strong indications that the coronavirus originated in a seafood market illegally selling wildlife in Wuhan, China, and a line of thinking that it has passed (during transport/trade) from bats, to pangolins, to people. This is a further reminder of the need to protect and respect nature, and specifically to tackle the illegal trade in wildlife. BirdLife has been committed for many years to addressing this threat to biodiversity.
Over the coming years we will be further strengthening our work on the illegal trade in birds, particularly in South-East Asia, ensuring that they are protected and that illegal trapping and trade is brought to an end. We also are working together with TRAFFIC (wildlife trades specialists), Fauna and Flora International and Wildlife Conservation Society, through the Restore Species Partnership, to tackle this issue more widely as it affects many other groups of animals.
How are we protecting our staff?
At the BirdLife Secretariat in Cambridge UK, we have set up a COVID-19 Contingency Planning Group to help gather information and prepare policies and plans that set out how our staff can stay safe and healthy. The group is meeting weekly and providing guidance to our staff around the world so we can support them quickly in a rapidly changing situation. We recognise that nature needs our support more than ever, as global attention is diverted elsewhere. Therefore, we are committed to continue working while at same time ensuring that our staff stay healthy.
How are we working with our Partners?
We know that in the midst of this negative news, some Partners organisations may feel isolated and overwhelmed. The well-being of each and every Partner is utmost in our mind and we will remain available to each other as the BirdLife family. We are also sharing full policies, guidance and updates for information to support where we can in these unprecedented times. The disruptions to people’s daily activities because of the virus are also damaging to the crucial conservation work that we do. That is why we are making plans to ensure we can continue to service the Partnership with our usual enthusiasm and commitment.
We cannot stress enough how the fight to protect biodiversity across the globe has never been more important.
Your continued support, as advocates and donors, is vital to protecting our planet. Many people have given generously to our recent Red List appeal and in the upcoming weeks and months we will be doing all we can to ensure we play our part in making sure this situation doesn’t repeat. We want to come back to you with our thoughts but in the meantime, if you wish to discuss this in more detail, please let me know…..

Las últimas semanas han demostrado nuevamente la interconexión de la vida en nuestro planeta y nuestra dependencia de él para nuestra salud y bienestar.
Hay fuertes indicios de que el coronavirus se originó en un mercado de mariscos que vende ilegalmente vida silvestre en Wuhan, China, y una línea de pensamiento de que ha pasado (durante el transporte / comercio) de murciélagos, pangolines, a personas. Reconocemos que la naturaleza necesita nuestro apoyo más que nunca, ya que la atención global se desvía hacia otro lado. Por lo tanto, nos comprometemos a seguir trabajando y al mismo tiempo garantizar que nuestro personal se mantenga saludable.
¿Cómo estamos trabajando con nuestros socios?
Sabemos que, en medio de esta noticia negativa, algunas organizaciones asociadas pueden sentirse aisladas y abrumadas. El bienestar de todos y cada uno de los Socios es fundamental en nuestra mente y estaremos disponibles los unos para los otros como la familia BirdLife. También compartimos políticas completas, orientación y actualizaciones para obtener información que respalde donde podamos en estos tiempos sin precedentes. Las interrupciones en las actividades diarias de las personas debido al virus también son perjudiciales para el trabajo de conservación crucial que hacemos. Es por eso que estamos haciendo planes para garantizar que podamos continuar prestando servicio a la Asociación con nuestro entusiasmo y compromiso habituales.
No podemos enfatizar lo suficiente cómo la lucha para proteger la biodiversidad en todo el mundo nunca ha sido más importante.
Su continuo apoyo, como defensores y donantes, es vital para proteger nuestro planeta.
