Description


Recognized as one of the largest and most robust members of its family within the order Apodiformes, this majestic aerialist stands out due to its exceptionally fast flight and aerodynamic profile. It exhibits a body length ranging from 20 to 22 centimeters (approximately 8 inches), with an impressive wingspan that can reach up to 55 centimeters (21.5 inches) and an average body mass of 85 to 110 grams. Its plumage is predominantly sooty-black with subtle bluish reflections on the dorsum, while its most prominent diagnostic feature is a conspicuous white collar that completely encircles the hindneck and upper breast, which tends to be narrower and more diffuse in juvenile individuals. The tail is slightly notched but often appears square-cut during flight. Its wings are extremely long, slender, and backward-curved in a scythe-like shape, an evolutionary adaptation perfectly suited for high-efficiency aerial locomotion. The bill is extremely short and glossy black, but it features a remarkably wide gape that functions as an effective net to capture prey mid-air, accompanied by dark eyes and tiny, weak feet equipped with strong claws adapted solely for clinging to vertical surfaces.

Geographical distribution It possesses an extremely vast distribution range covering much of the Neotropics and montane regions of the Americas. It is found from southern Mexico and Central America, extending along the Andean mountain range in South America through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, down to northwestern Argentina and southeastern Brazil. It is also consistently recorded on several islands in the Caribbean Sea, such as Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. Although mostly resident throughout much of its range, populations inhabiting the southernmost limits of its distribution perform seasonal migratory movements toward more temperate latitudes during the austral winter months, seeking favorable climates to ensure the availability of trophic resources.

Habitat: It inhabits a remarkable diversity of ecological environments, showing a strong preference for mountainous areas, steep cliffs, deep canyons, and humid montane forests, as well as tropical and temperate forests from sea level to elevations exceeding 3,500 meters above sea level. It is commonly observed soaring over inter-Andean valleys, open plains, and even densely populated urban areas adjacent to prominent mountain formations. An indispensable environmental factor for the establishment of its colonies is the presence of water bodies with vertical drops, such as waterfalls, humid rocky gorges, and deep caves, which provide humid microclimates and natural protection against terrestrial and aerial predators.

Feeding Its dietary regime is strictly insectivorous, characterized by being a highly efficient aerial predator that captures its prey in mid-air at high altitudes. Its diet consists of a wide variety of flying arthropods, with a marked preference for social insects undergoing massive nuptial flights, such as hymenopterans (winged ants and wasps), isopterans (termites), as well as coleopterans, dipterans, hemipterans, and odonates. It utilizes thermal air currents to ascend to considerable altitudes where it intercepts dense swarms of insects, using its wide mouth cavity like a funnel. Additionally, it often forages in large mixed-species flocks with other swifts, especially before the arrival of cold fronts or storms, when insects are pushed downward by atmospheric pressure changes.

Behavior: It is noted for its highly gregarious habits, forming flocks that can gather from dozens to several thousand individuals coordinating their aerial movements with astonishing synchrony. It spends most of the day in the air, performing the majority of its biological functions in flight, with the exception of nesting and nocturnal roosting. Its flight is a display of dynamic power, characterized by rapid, vigorous wingbeats alternated with prolonged glides at astonishing speeds that can exceed 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour). At dusk, the colonies offer an impressive spectacle as they gather in large masses over their roosting sites, subsequently performing spectacular, almost vertical dives into caves or behind the water curtains of waterfalls, where they rest hanging vertically from the rocks. Its vocalizations consist of high-pitched, metallic, and repetitive screeching, described as a strident "chii-chii-chii" that echoes loudly in the canyons it inhabits.

Nesting The reproductive process is colonial and intrinsically linked to hard-to-reach lotic and underground habitats. It builds its nest on vertical rocky ledges of damp cliffs, dark cave walls, and, with notable frequency, directly behind the flow of permanent waterfalls, where the nests remain constantly misted by water spray. The nest consists of a semicircular, cup-like structure or compact ledge made of mud, moss, fern spores, rootlets, and other plant materials collected in the air or nearby, all firmly bound together with its own sticky saliva, which acts as a fast-setting natural cement. The female typically lays two immaculate white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately 30 to 35 days. The chicks hatch devoid of down and depend entirely on biparental care, being fed with regurgitated food boluses containing thousands of compacted insects. The nestling period is extremely prolonged compared to other birds, lasting between 45 and 55 days until the young acquire full plumage and the wing strength necessary to launch directly into flight from the cliff face.

Conservation status It is currently evaluated under the Least Concern (LC) category according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. This is due to its extremely vast geographical distribution range and the fact that its global population size is estimated to be stable, with no evidence of severe declines or imminent critical threats. However, at a local level, its populations can be negatively affected by the alteration of its specific nesting sites due to the development of hydroelectric projects, the deforestation of montane forests that reduces available insect biomass, and the pollution of water sources by mining or agricultural activities.
