Pseudoseisura gutturalis gutturalis

Characterized as a medium-to-large member of its family, this passerine measures approximately 22 to 23 centimeters in total length. Its plumage displays a cryptic coloration adapted to arid landscapes, consisting of overall sandy-brown to grayish-brown tones. The most diagnostic morphological feature is its striking bright white throat, which contrastingly highlights against the duller plumage and is sometimes bordered by delicate darker speckles. It possesses a subtle, erectile crest on the crown, a heavy, slightly decurved lead-gray bill, and distinctive pale yellow to whitish irises that give it an intense expression.

Geographical distribution: This bird is endemic to Argentina, where it occupies a wide latitudinal range spanning from the northwestern Andean foothills in the provinces of Salta, Tucumán, and Catamarca, extending southwards through the arid central Monte regions of La Rioja, San Juan, Mendoza, San Luis, and La Pampa, and reaching its southernmost limit in the northern Patagonian provinces of Río Negro and northeastern Chubut.

Habitat: Strongly associated with arid and semi-arid shrublands, this species is typically found in the Monte biogeographical province and the ecotones shifting towards the Patagonian steppe. It favors open environments characterized by thorny scrub, low xerophytic woodlands, rocky hillsides with sparse vegetation, and dry washes populated by columnar cacti and stunted Prosopis trees.

Feeding: Primarily insectivorous and opportunistic, its diet consists of a wide array of terrestrial invertebrates. It is a dedicated ground-forager, using its robust bill to flip over stones, sweep away leaf litter, and probe into dry soil. It feeds heavily on beetles, ants, grasshoppers, and various insect larvae, occasionally supplementing its diet with seeds, small berries from desert shrubs, and tiny reptiles such as juvenile lizards when available.

Behavior: Noticeably terrestrial, this bird is frequently seen walking or running swiftly on the ground with a cocked tail. It usually moves in pairs or small family parties and is well-known for its loud, conspicuous nature. The species is highly vocal, performing dramatic, coordinated duets consisting of harsh, metallic, and rattling calls that can be heard from a significant distance, serving to defend their territory throughout the year. When threatened, it prefers to escape by running into dense undergrowth rather than taking flight.

Nesting: Builds massive, conspicuous nests made of interlaced thorny twigs and branches, which are easily visible in the sparse desert canopy. These bulky, dome-shaped structures are placed at low-to-medium heights in thorny bushes or cacti. The nest features a complex curved entrance tunnel designed to deter predators, leading to an inner nesting chamber heavily lined with soft materials such as plant down, wool, mammal hair, and feathers. A clutch typically consists of 2 to 4 dull white eggs, which are incubated by both parents who also share duties in feeding the chicks.

Conservation status: Listed as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Since it occurs across vast, sparsely populated regions of the Argentine Monte and Patagonia, its populations are considered stable and do not currently face any major, immediate threats of habitat fragmentation or decline.
