Phoebis sennae marcellina

This is a medium-to-large lepidopteran taxon that exhibits a wingspan ranging from 63 to 78 millimeters, featuring a highly pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males are characterized by a uniform, vivid lemon-yellow coloration on the dorsal surface of their wings, showing almost no dark markings. In contrast, females present a highly variable base color, ranging from pale yellow to greenish-white, adorned with a distinct dark spot in the center of the forewing and dark brown borders along the margins. The ventral side of the wings in both sexes resembles autumn foliage, detailed with small silvery spots ringed in pink and a delicate dusting of reddish-brown scales that provide exceptional camouflage when resting. The caterpillars of this species exhibit remarkable color polymorphism: they can be bright green with yellow lateral stripes and blue spots, or intense yellow when feeding primarily on host flowers.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the Americas, ranging from the southern United States (with seasonal northward migrations into the northern US and southern Canada during the summer) through Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and deep into South America, reaching as far south as central Argentina and Uruguay. It represents one of the most widespread and successful migratory pierid butterflies in the Western Hemisphere, capable of traveling immense distances to escape unfavorable climates.

Habitat: This insect occupies a wide variety of ecosystems, showing a strong preference for open areas, disturbed sites, and forest edges. It is a common inhabitant of human-dominated landscapes, including suburban gardens, urban parks, agricultural fields, pastures, and roadsides, where both nectar sources and host plants are abundant. It can also be found in coastal dunes, dry scrublands, and tropical forest clearings.

Feeding: As adults, they possess a long, specialized proboscis that allows them to extract nectar from deep, tubular flowers, showing a marked preference for species within the genera Lantana, Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Cordia, and Ipomoea. Conversely, the larvae are specialized herbivores that feed exclusively on plants of the Fabaceae family, with a strong preference for the genus Senna (formerly categorized under Cassia), consuming young foliage, flower buds, and petals.

Behavior: It is renowned for being an exceptionally fast, strong, and erratic flyer, maintaining high activity during peak daylight hours. Adult males frequently engage in mud-puddling, congregating on damp soil, riverbanks, and muddy puddles to uptake vital minerals and sodium necessary for mating success. In autumn, northern populations engage in massive, unidirectional southward migrations to seek warmer overwintering grounds.

Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with an active aerial courtship in which the male pursues the female. After copulation, the female deposits her spindle-shaped eggs singly on the young leaves, flower buds, or stems of host plants in the genus Senna. These eggs are initially creamy-white and shift to a bright yellow color prior to hatching. The larvae undergo five instars before forming a chrysalis secured by a silk girdle; the pupa is highly arched and cryptically shaped to mimic a green or dried leaf, with metamorphosis completing in roughly two weeks depending on the ambient temperature.

Conservation status: It has not been formally assessed globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but it is widely considered to be a species of Least Concern due to its vast geographical range, high abundance, and stable population trends. Its ability to colonize disturbed habitats and utilize common ornamental plants ensures its continued ecological success.
