Behavior: It is renowned for being an exceptionally fast, strong, and erratic flyer, maintaining high activity during peak daylight hours. Adult males frequently engage in mud-puddling, congregating on damp soil, riverbanks, and muddy puddles to uptake vital minerals and sodium necessary for mating success. In autumn, northern populations engage in massive, unidirectional southward migrations to seek warmer overwintering grounds.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with an active aerial courtship in which the male pursues the female. After copulation, the female deposits her spindle-shaped eggs singly on the young leaves, flower buds, or stems of host plants in the genus Senna. These eggs are initially creamy-white and shift to a bright yellow color prior to hatching. The larvae undergo five instars before forming a chrysalis secured by a silk girdle; the pupa is highly arched and cryptically shaped to mimic a green or dried leaf, with metamorphosis completing in roughly two weeks depending on the ambient temperature.
Conservation status: It has not been formally assessed globally by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but it is widely considered to be a species of Least Concern due to its vast geographical range, high abundance, and stable population trends. Its ability to colonize disturbed habitats and utilize common ornamental plants ensures its continued ecological success.
