Records of Myiodynastes maculatus solitarius

Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This robust and large tyrant flycatcher measures between 7.8 and 8.6 inches (20 to 22 cm) in length and weighs approximately 1.4 to 1.6 ounces (40 to 45 g). Its plumage is highly distinctive, featuring dense, dark brown streaks overall over a whitish to pale yellow base on the breast and abdomen. The upperparts are olive-brown with prominent dark brown shaft streaks. A bold, white supercilium contrasts sharply with a dark eye-stripe, and the greyish crown conceals a bright yellow crown patch that is only exposed during courtship displays or territorial defense. The bill is heavy, broad, and slightly hooked at the tip, with a pinkish or pale flesh-colored base on the lower mandible. The wings and tail feature diagnostic rufous or cinnamon edges, which are particularly bright and extensive in southern populations.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region, ranging from eastern Mexico and Central America, through the Amazon Basin, and extending as far south as northern Argentina and Uruguay. The southern subspecies, Myiodynastes maculatus solitarius, behaves as an austral migrant; it breeds in southern South America during the warmer months and migrates northward to the Amazonian lowlands and northern South America during the southern winter, representing an important intratropical migratory component.

Habitat: This species primarily occupies semi-open forest edges, secondary woodlands, riparian forests, agricultural clearings with scattered trees, mangroves, and mature urban parks or gardens. It generally avoids the dark, continuous interior of primary tropical rainforests, preferring the more open canopies and edge environments where sunlight and prey are abundant.

Feeding: It maintains a highly opportunistic omnivorous diet that changes according to seasonal abundance. It feeds heavily on large insects such as beetles, cicadas, grasshoppers, and caterpillars, which it captures by sallying from conspicuous perches in typical flycatcher fashion. In addition to invertebrates, it occasionally preys on small vertebrates like tree frogs and lizards. During the non-breeding season and migration, its diet is heavily supplemented with various wild fruits and berries, making it an effective seed disperser.

Behavior: Highly conspicuous and vocal, this bird is known for its bold demeanor and noisy presence. It routinely perches high on exposed branches to monitor its territory, emitting sharp, squeaky, almost mechanical-sounding chatter that resembles a squeeze-toy. It is fiercely territorial during the breeding cycle, aggressively chasing away much larger avian intruders such as toucans, jays, and birds of prey that venture too close to its nesting site.

Nesting: This cavity-nesting species utilizes natural tree hollows, abandoned woodpecker holes, or human-made structures like nest boxes and crevices in buildings. The female constructs a loose, cup-shaped nest inside the cavity, weaving twigs, dry petioles, bark fibers, and moss. She typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs, heavily blotched with reddish-brown and lavender markings. Incubation is performed primarily by the female and lasts about 16 to 17 days. Both parents actively share the duties of feeding and defending the nestlings, which fledge and leave the nest approximately 18 to 21 days after hatching.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Thanks to its extensive geographical range, adaptable ecological requirements, and high tolerance for human-modified and fragmented landscapes, its population trends remain stable, and it does not currently face any significant threats of extinction.
