Records of Mazama americana rufa

Conservation status: Data Deficient

Description

This medium-sized Neotropical cervid is characterized by its slender and delicate build, featuring a noticeably arched back and hindquarters that are slightly higher than its shoulders. Its pelage displays a vibrant reddish-brown coloration across the back and flanks, which transitions to pale gray or light brown tones on the head and neck, whereas the underparts, inner thighs, and the underside of the tail are a clean white. Adult males develop short, unbranched spike antlers that typically measure between 7 and 15 centimeters in length. Adult body mass ranges from 24 to 48 kilograms, with a shoulder height spanning 70 to 80 centimeters, making this species the largest representative of its genus.

Geographical distribution: The species is widely distributed across the Neotropical region of South America. Its geographical range extends from the northern territories of Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas, southward through the expansive Amazon basin of Brazil, eastern Ecuador, and Peru, reaching its southern limits in Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina.

Habitat: It primarily occupies dense humid tropical forests and subtropical rainforests, showing a strong preference for pristine primary growth areas with thick understory vegetation. It is also commonly found in gallery forests, wooded wetlands, and occasionally in mature secondary successional forests, provided there is reliable proximity to permanent water sources and dense vegetative cover to shelter from predators and human disturbance.

Feeding: Classified as a frugivore and concentrate selector, its diet is composed mainly of ripe fallen fruits gathered directly from the forest floor. It complements this nutrient-rich food source by browsing on tender leaves, young shoots, flowers, wild fungi, and occasionally highly digestible herbaceous plants, actively avoiding coarse fibrous grasses in favor of more easily digestible vegetation.

Behavior: It is a highly solitary and elusive animal, exhibiting peak activity levels during crepuscular and nocturnal hours. The species relies heavily on chemical communication, utilizing specialized scent glands located near the eyes and between the hooves to mark territories and communicate with conspecifics. When threatened, its primary defense strategy is to freeze in place to blend with the dense foliage, and if detected, it flees rapidly through the undergrowth, being also an excellent swimmer capable of crossing wide rivers.

Reproduction: This mammal does not exhibit a strict seasonal breeding cycle, being capable of breeding throughout the entire year, with localized births often peaking during periods of high fruit availability. Following a gestation period of approximately 218 to 228 days, females give birth to a single offspring (rarely twins), which is born with a coat covered in white spots that provide exceptional camouflage against predators, fading gradually within a few months.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as Data Deficient (DD) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), largely due to ongoing taxonomic revisions and the complex splitting of its species group. However, localized populations face significant and severe threats from habitat loss and fragmentation caused by agricultural expansion and intensive subsistence and sport hunting for its meat.
