Leptotila rufaxilla hellmayri

Characterized by a medium-sized, plump body, this columbid species typically measures between 26 and 28 centimeters in length and weighs from 115 to 180 grams. The forehead displays a distinctive pale gray or whitish coloration that merges into a bluish-gray crown, which is a key diagnostic feature of this bird. The mantle, back, and upperwing coverts are a uniform olive-brown, while the breast exhibits a soft, delicate pinkish-buff or vinaceous wash that gradually fades into a whitish belly and flanks. When in flight or during wing displays, the underwing coverts reveal a striking and vibrant bright cinnamon or rufous coloration, which is a major field mark. The bill is solid black, and the legs and feet are a prominent purplish-red. A key distinction from closely related sympatric congeners is the reddish or greyish-red orbital bare skin surrounding a yellow to pale orange iris.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the South American continent, with a geographical range extending from the northern regions of Venezuela, Colombia, and the Guianas, southward through the Amazon basin of Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil, down to northern Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Uruguay. This vast distribution covers both lowland areas east of the Andes and warm, humid inter-Andean valleys at moderate elevations.

Habitat: Inhabits primarily the understory and mid-story levels of humid lowland forests, gallery forests, mature secondary growth, dense plantations, and transitional habitats such as capoeiras. Unlike some of its congeners that prefer drier, more open scrublands, this species is closely associated with highly humid environments and is frequently found near permanent watercourses, streams, or swampy forest edges.

Feeding: Classified as a granivore and frugivore, searching for sustenance almost exclusively on the forest floor. The diet consists of a wide variety of seeds from grasses, weeds, and shrubs, alongside small fallen fruits and berries collected from the humid leaf litter. It also occasionally consumes small invertebrates, including insects and their larvae, which are uncovered by scratching and turning over damp leaves.

Behavior: Mostly terrestrial, solitary, or found in pairs, walking quietly on the ground with a rhythmic head-bobbing motion. It is a highly secretive and wary bird that prefers to run or walk quickly into dense undergrowth when disturbed, rather than taking flight. If flushed, its wings produce a characteristic whirring sound. Its call is a deep, low-pitched, and melancholic "coo-coooo", repeated at regular intervals, usually delivered from hidden perches in the low or mid-canopy during early morning or late afternoon.

Nesting: Constructs a flimsy, shallow platform nest composed of dry twigs, rootlets, and leaf stems, typically positioned at low to moderate heights ranging from 1 to 5 meters above the ground in thick shrubs, tangled vines, or horizontal tree forks. The typical clutch consists of two elliptical, white or pale cream eggs. Incubation is shared by both parents for approximately 14 days. After hatching, the altricial chicks are cared for by both adults and fed with a nutritious protein-rich substance known as crop milk during their initial development phase.

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it experiences localized habitat loss and fragmentation due to agricultural expansion and deforestation within the Amazon and Atlantic forests, the overall population remains stable and widespread, showing a degree of tolerance to selective logging and secondary forest regeneration as long as adequate undergrowth is preserved.
