Description


Representing a medium-sized hummingbird taxon that measures between 4.3 to 4.7 inches (11 to 12 centimeters) in length and weighs approximately 6 grams, this species is characterized by remarkable sexual dimorphism and a complex phenomenon of female polymorphism. The adult male features a striking plumage, with a brilliant cobalt blue head, throat, and breast that contrasts sharply with a white crescent-shaped collar on the nape and a pure white abdomen. Its outer tail feathers are snow-white with narrow dark tips, producing a highly distinctive pattern during flight. Conversely, females display two distinct morphs: heteromorphic females possess a bronze-green back, a scaly-patterned throat and chest of green and white feathers, and a dark green tail with white and blue tips; whereas androchromic females mimic the adult male´s plumage almost perfectly, an adaptive evolutionary strategy that allows them to avoid harassment and aggression from territorial males at feeding sites. Juveniles display rust-brown margins on their crown feathers and lack the sharp, clean color contrasts found in mature individuals.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region, extending from southern Mexico (including the states of Veracruz, Chiapas, and the Yucatan Peninsula), across Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama), and deep into South America. Its South American range encompasses the Amazon Basin, the northern Andean slopes of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, the Guianas, and central-western Brazil, with additional stable insular populations residing in Trinidad and Tobago.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the canopy and sub-canopy of humid lowland rainforests, tropical forest edges, mature secondary growth, and transitional forests. It also successfully colonizes human-modified environments, such as shade-grown coffee and cacao plantations, wooded gardens, and semi-open areas with scattered trees. Although it prefers elevations below 3,000 feet (900 meters above sea level), it has been recorded seasonally or locally in humid Andean valleys at elevations reaching up to 4,000 feet (1,200 meters).

Feeding: It sustains a mixed diet specialized in high-calorie nectar consumption and the capture of small invertebrates. It extracts floral nectar from a diverse array of species, showing a marked preference for plants within the Bromeliaceae, Heliconiaceae, and Rubiaceae families, as well as flowering trees of the genera Erythrina and Inga. It complements its nutritional needs by catching tiny dipterans, hymenopterans, and spiders mid-air using rapid aerial maneuvers (hawking) or by gleaning prey from the surfaces of leaves high in the forest canopy.

Behavior: Highly active, fast-moving, and aggressively territorial, this bird is a dominant presence in its ecological niche. Males vigorously defend rich floral patches against smaller hummingbird species using high-pitched chattering songs and dramatic aerial displays. Interestingly, androchromic females, by visually resembling males, manage to access these guarded resources with significantly fewer aggressive encounters. It is an exceptional flyer capable of complex maneuvers, including prolonged hovering and backward flight, which are defining traits of its family´s flight mechanics.

Nesting: The breeding season varies considerably by geographical latitude, coinciding with local peak flowering periods. The female assumes sole responsibility for all reproductive duties, from nest building to raising the offspring. She constructs a small, deep, and compact cup nest made of fine plant fibers, seed down, cobwebs, and lichen flakes to camouflage the exterior. This nest is typically built on a broad, horizontal leaf of understory palms, ferns, or shrubs, often sheltered by an overhanging leaf that functions as a natural roof against rainfall. She lays a standard clutch of two white eggs, which she incubates for 15 to 16 days. The chicks remain in the nest for 20 to 22 days before fledging and achieving independence.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population remains stable and its geographical range is exceptionally broad, local threats to the taxon stem from habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation caused by agricultural expansion and urban development, highlighting the critical value of protecting biological corridors and shade-grown agroforestry networks.
