Cinclodes patagonicus chilensis

This is a medium-sized passerine species of the ovenbird family (Furnariidae) measuring between 7.0 and 8.3 inches (18 to 21 cm) in total length and weighing roughly 37 to 54 grams. The upperparts of its body are predominantly a deep dark grayish-brown, transitioning to a slightly darker shade on the crown. It features a striking and long white supercilium that curves gracefully behind the eye, contrasting sharply with its dark facial area. Its throat is white with faint dusky streaks that merge into a dark grayish-brown chest and belly, which are marked with subtle, diffuse whitish shaft streaks. Its bill is blackish, relatively long, and slightly decurved, perfectly suited for probing rocky crevices. The legs are strong and dark gray or blackish, and in flight, this bird reveals a prominent pale buff or whitish wingbar that flashes against the darker flight feathers.

Geographical distribution: It is native to the southern cone of South America, with a range that stretches across Chile and Argentina. In Chile, it can be found from the Valparaíso and Santiago Metropolitan regions southwards all the way to Tierra del Fuego and Cape Horn. In Argentina, its distribution encompasses the Patagonian provinces starting from Neuquén and Río Negro south to Tierra del Fuego, including Staten Island and the Falkland Islands, where it is a well-established resident breeder.

Habitat: It is highly dependent on and closely associated with aquatic and coastal environments. It prefers rocky sea coasts, stony beaches, estuarine mudflats, and the margins of fast-flowing rivers, mountain streams, and freshwater lakes in the subantarctic forests and Patagonian steppe. Its altitudinal range extends from sea level up to roughly 5,900 feet (1800 meters) in elevation, always showing a marked preference for wet rocky substrates influenced by water currents or tidal action.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous and carnivorous, consisting mainly of aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. It feeds heavily on insects (specifically dipterans and coleopterans) and their larvae, small crustaceans such as amphipods, intertidal mollusks, and marine worms, which it skilfully extracts from kelp piles on beaches or from wet rock crevices using its specialized bill.

Behavior: It is a highly active, terrestrial, and conspicuous bird that is typically seen singly or in pairs. It has a characteristic habit of bobbing its tail and body continuously while standing on prominent rocks. When singing—which consists of a loud, rapid, high-pitched metallic trill—it performs an energetic visual display by vigorously flapping and raising its wings, a behavior used for territorial defense and communication.

Nesting: The breeding season takes place during the Southern Hemisphere spring and summer, ranging from October to January. It constructs its nest at the end of a deep burrow, which it may dig into dirt or clay banks, or it utilizes deep crevices in rocky cliffs, gaps under large boulders, or spaces under artificial structures like bridges and coastal buildings. The nesting chamber is lined with a soft cup of dry grasses, rootlets, feathers, and animal hair, where the female lays 2 to 4 pure white eggs that are incubated by both parents.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This status is justified by its extensive geographical distribution and because its global population size appears to be stable, lacking evidence of any severe or imminent threats to its populations.
