Description

This is a remarkably robust and globular anuran amphibian characterized by an oversized head merging into a rounded body with an exceptionally wide mouth. Adults show pronounced sexual dimorphism in size, with females reaching lengths of up to 14 centimeters (5.5 inches), while males typically measure between 9 and 11 centimeters (3.5 to 4.3 inches). The dorsal coloration is highly striking, featuring a complex pattern of bright green, brown, and reddish patches set against a yellowish background, providing excellent camouflage within the grass and leaf litter. It exhibits prominent fleshy horn-like projections over its eyes formed by dermal folds, and its lower jaw possesses highly ossified odontoid processes that function like teeth, delivering an incredibly powerful bite force.

Geographical distribution: It is native to the southern cone of South America, primarily distributed throughout the central and eastern regions of Argentina (specifically within the provinces of Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and La Pampa), extending into southern Uruguay, and occurring marginally in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southernmost Brazil.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits the grasslands and savannas of the Pampean region, characterized by temperate plains with seasonal rainfall. It selects humid terrestrial microhabitats, such as the margins of ephemeral ponds, flooded pastures, and low-intensity agricultural zones, where clayey or sandy soils facilitate its burrowing habits.

Feeding: It functions as an extremely voracious, generalist ambush predator. Its diet is remarkably diverse, consisting of large invertebrates, small rodents, lizards, ground-dwelling passerine birds, and other amphibians, with frequent occurrences of cannibalism on smaller conspecifics; its hunting strategy involves burying itself almost completely, leaving only its eyes and snout exposed, waiting for unsuspecting prey to pass within striking distance.

Behavior: It exhibits a predominantly fossorial and sedentary lifestyle, utilizing a spade-like metatarsal tubercle on its hind limbs to dig backward into moist soil. During periods of winter cold or extreme drought, it enters a state of estivation, secreting a protective cocoon made of shed skin layers to prevent desiccation. It displays highly territorial and aggressive defensive behavior when threatened, inflating its body with air, emitting loud, piercing distress screams, and lunging to bite.

Reproduction: It is an explosive breeder, with reproductive activity closely synchronized with heavy spring and summer rains. Males congregate in shallow, temporary pools and emit deep mating calls to attract females. Following axillary amplexus, the female deposits between 1,000 and 2,000 eggs, which are scattered individually across the bottom of the pond. Embryonic development is exceptionally rapid; the carnivorous and macrophagous tadpoles hatch within a day, actively preying on other tadpoles and utilizing underwater acoustic signals to communicate.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, facing critical threats from habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation driven by agricultural expansion and urbanization. Furthermore, its populations suffer from direct persecution due to local myths regarding its toxicity, alongside pressure from the illegal exotic pet trade.
