Description


Characterized as a small and highly energetic passerine bird belonging to the Tyrannidae family, this taxon measures between 10.5 and 11.5 centimeters in length and weighs approximately 7 to 8 grams. Its plumage is highly distinctive, featuring a bright olive-green upperpart coloration that contrasts with a uniformly bright yellow underside, spanning from the throat all the way to the undertail coverts. A conspicuous, vibrant yellow supercilium arches over its dark eyes, accompanied by olivaceous lores. The wings are adorned with two distinct yellowish wing bars set against dark brown flight feathers. The bill is relatively short, broad at the base, with a black upper mandible and a paler, flesh-colored or pinkish base on the lower mandible, adapted for snatching small insects. The legs are slender and dark gray to blackish. Both sexes exhibit identical morphology, showing no visible sexual dimorphism in plumage coloration or size.

Geographical distribution: This species occupies an extensive range across the Neotropics, extending from southern Central America to northern South America and down to the Río de la Plata basin. Its native range starts in southern Nicaragua, continuing through Costa Rica and Panama, and entering the South American continent through Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas. Further south, its distribution encompasses the Andean and Amazonian slopes of Ecuador, Peru, and northern Bolivia, while spanning widely across central and eastern Brazil, the entirety of Paraguay, and reaching its southernmost limit in northeastern Argentina within the province of Misiones. Despite this vast distribution, its presence is often localized and patchily distributed.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits semi-open areas, humid tropical and subtropical forest edges, young secondary growth forests, dense shrubby fields, shaded agricultural plantations, gardens, and degraded areas dominated by overgrown weeds. It displays a strong ecological affinity for dense bamboo thickets belonging to the genera Guadua or Chusquea, which offer excellent cover. Its elevational distribution ranges from sea level up to approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, although it may occasionally be found at higher elevations in inter-Andean valleys where scrubby and dense vegetation provides adequate foraging opportunities.

Feeding: The diet is omnivorous, though predominantly insectivorous. It actively consumes a wide variety of small invertebrates and arthropods hidden within dense foliage, including spiders, caterpillars, small beetles, aphids, and midges. In addition, it supplements its nutritional intake with small fleshy fruits and berries, particularly from parasitic mistletoes of the Loranthaceae family and shrubs belonging to the Melastomataceae family. Foraging techniques include active gleaning, hover-gleaning from the undersides of leaves, and rapid aerial sallies to capture flying prey over short distances.

Behavior: It is characterized by an extremely active and restless temperament, rarely staying in one perch for more than a few seconds. It is typically observed foraging singly, in stable monogamous pairs, or in small family groups that maintain constant vocal contact. A diagnostic behavioral trait is its habit of holding its tail cocked upward and performing a rhythmic wagging or twitching motion accompanied by rapid, intermittent wing-flicking. It frequently joins mixed-species foraging flocks moving through the understory and mid-story. Its vocal repertoire is busy, consisting of continuous high-pitched, buzzy, and chirping calls used to maintain group cohesion within dense cover.

Nesting: The breeding process of this passerine involves the meticulous construction of a neat, open-cup nest. The structure is built by both members of the pair using fine plant fibers, rootlets, green moss, and spiderwebs to secure the nest and bond it to the supporting branches. The nest is typically placed low in the vegetation, usually between 1 and 4 meters above the ground, concealed within the fork of a small shrub or inside dense bamboo foliage. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 eggs, which are creamy-white or pale buff, heavily speckled with reddish-brown spots concentrated at the larger end. Both parents share the responsibilities of incubating the eggs and feeding the hatchlings.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Its global population is considered stable, and the species benefits from the moderate fragmentation of primary forests. Because it successfully tolerates disturbed habitats and easily colonizes mature secondary growth and anthropized forest edges, it faces no immediate severe threats of extinction across its vast geographical distribution.
