It is a large-bodied lizard belonging to the family Teiidae, scientifically known as Ameiva ameiva, characterized by its striking sexual dimorphism and vibrant coloration. Adult males can reach an overall length of 20 to 24 inches (50 to 60 centimeters) including their long, whip-like tail, with a snout-to-vent length of about 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 centimeters). They display a brilliant emerald green coloration on the anterior half of their dorsum, which transitions into bronze-brown or gray tones toward the posterior region, complemented by flanks speckled with turquoise blue and white spots. Females and juveniles exhibit a more cryptic, predominantly brownish coloration with distinct longitudinal light stripes running along their sides. Their heads are robust, particularly in mature males which possess swollen jowls, and they feature strong limbs equipped with sharp claws adapted for rapid digging.
Geographical distribution: This saurian is widely distributed across the Neotropical realm, spanning from southern Central America (specifically Panama) throughout most of South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, the entirety of Brazil, and northern Argentina. Additionally, it is native to several Caribbean islands, such as Trinidad and Tobago, and has been successfully introduced into southern Florida in the United States, where it has established stable, self-sustaining breeding populations due to its ecological adaptability.
Habitat: It inhabits a wide variety of low-elevation ecosystems, showing a strong preference for open areas, forest edges of primary and secondary woodlands, savannas such as the Cerrado, Caatinga dry scrublands, gallery forests, coastal restingas, and human-modified environments like agricultural fields, forest clearings, and suburban gardens. As a highly heliophilic species, it relies heavily on open spaces with direct sun exposure to regulate its body temperature, generally avoiding the deep, shaded interiors of dense rainforests.
Feeding: Operating as an opportunistic and generalist predator, its diet is primarily insectivorous but can expand to a broad carnivorous spectrum. Its main food sources consist of various active invertebrates, including beetles, grasshoppers, caterpillars, spiders, ants, and snails. Larger individuals are known to prey upon small vertebrates, such as smaller lizard species, frogs, and rodents, while occasionally supplementing their diet with plant matter, particularly ripe fallen fruits and seeds found on the forest floor.
Behavior: It exhibits strictly diurnal habits and a highly active lifestyle centered around precise thermoregulation, often seen basking on fallen logs or sunlit rocks during the hottest hours of the day. It is an active forage hunter, constantly using its deeply forked tongue to gather chemical cues from its surroundings and transfer them to the Jacobson´s organ to locate prey hidden beneath leaf litter. This reptile is exceptionally fast and agile, relying on explosive bursts of speed to flee from predators and taking refuge in self-excavated burrows in sandy soils or natural crevices among tree roots.
Reproduction: This species is oviparous, and its reproductive cycle varies depending on regional climatic factors and latitude. In humid tropical rainforests, breeding can occur continuously throughout the year, whereas in regions with pronounced dry seasons, egg-laying is synchronized with the onset of the rainy period. Females reach sexual maturity at approximately one year of age and lay clutches containing 2 to 11 eggs, with clutch size being positively correlated with maternal body size. The eggs are deposited in moist, sandy subterranean nests where they incubate under ambient heat for 60 to 90 days before the independent hatchlings emerge.
Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This assessment is justified by its vast geographical range, high population densities, and remarkable tolerance for habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic disturbances, meaning there are no major immediate threats to the long-term survival of its populations.
