Ave residente en estos cuerpos de aguas continentales ,sola o en parejas, se dice que forman colonias en la estación reproductiva asociadas con garzas e ibis en los extensos garceros que existen en los llanos. llama la atención su pico fino y puntiagudo para atravesar el cuerpo de los peces nadan sumergidos asomando solo la cabeza y el cuello (recuerda algunas serpientes acuáticas),cuando se posan extiende las alas para secarlas.
