Piojo masticador. Es el más frecuente y dañino en aves domésticas en el mundo. Es uno de los más grandes (2,5 a 3,5 mm) de color pardo. Se alimenta de restos de piel y plumas, y es capaz de chupar sangre de heridas que produce con sus mandíbulas. Se encuentra cerca de la piel del ave, raramente en las plumas, y prefiere partes del cuerpo con pocas plumas, como p.ej. alrededor de la cloaca. Pone grupos de huevos en las plumas o sobre ola piel.
