Su hábitat original son las inmediaciones del Mediterráneo Europeo y Africano, tambien en Oriente próximo, es una especie exótica para en continente Americano donde ya se observan colonias en Cuba, República Dominicana y las Antillas menores, así como la Florida, México y otros países de Centro América.
