Se define como la falta parcial o total de eumelanina o faeomelanina en las plumas, debido a un disturbio heredado en el proceso de formación de esos pigmentos.
El leucismo (indicado frecuentemente por error como "albinismo" o "albinismo parcial") parece ser la mutación de color genéticamente determinada más común en las aves.
