Hace unos años se advirtió en la Cuenca del Plata la presencia de este tercer bivalvo asiático de agua dulce. Las dos especies invasoras anteriores -introducidas a principios de la década del 70- son las almejas de agua dulce, Corbicula largillierti y C.fluminea, de la familia Corbiculidae.
