Greenish Elaenia

This is a small and slender passerine bird representing its family with a delicate silhouette, averaging a body length of 4.9 to 5.5 inches (12.5 to 14 centimeters) and weighing between 11 and 14 grams. The upperparts are washed in a soft olive-green coloration that provides excellent camouflage within the forest canopy, while the crown exhibits a slightly greyer tone with a mostly concealed, bright yellow crown patch that is actively flashed during territorial defense or courtship displays. The underparts transition smoothly from a pale greyish-white throat and breast, marked by faint olive streaks, to a distinctly pale-yellow belly. It features a short, dark bill with a conspicuously paler pinkish base to the lower mandible, dark brown eyes, and greyish legs. Distinct wing bars are generally absent, showing only subtle olive-yellow edges on the wing coverts and remiges.

Geographical distribution: This highly adaptable Neotropical migrant and resident occupies a vast geographical range extending from northern Mexico (along both the Pacific and Gulf slopes) southwards through all of Central America (including Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama). In South America, its distribution encompasses the northern territories of Colombia and Venezuela, extending eastwards through the Guianas and southwards through western Ecuador, Peru, northern and eastern Bolivia, and extensive portions of Brazil (primarily in the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and parts of the Amazonian basin). Its southern range terminates in eastern Paraguay and northwestern Argentina (reaching as far south as Tucumán province).

Habitat: It primarily inhabits a diverse array of wooded ecosystems, showing a strong affinity for semi-deciduous forests, gallery forests, secondary growth woodlands, and dense scrublands. It is highly resilient to anthropogenic landscape changes, frequently colonizing shaded coffee plantations, suburban orchards, and urban parks with mature tree cover. This species spans a wide elevational range, occurring from sea level up to approximately 4,900 feet (1,500 meters) elevation, although it can occasionally be found in humid mountain foothills up to 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) in tropical regions.

Feeding: It sustains an omnivorous diet that effectively balances the consumption of small arthropods and wild berries. Its insectivorous prey includes beetles, ants, caterpillars, flies, and hemipterans gleaned from foliage surfaces. It heavily supplements its nutritional intake with lipid-rich fruits from botanical families such as Loranthaceae, Araliaceae, and Melastomataceae, establishing its role as an important seed disperser within the middle and upper strata of its native forest ecosystems.

Behavior: It behaves as an active yet highly unobtrusive forager, typically observed singly or in pairs, although it occasionally joins mixed-species flocks moving through the canopy. It spends prolonged periods perched upright on slender twigs, quietly scanning the surrounding leaves before executing rapid hover-gleaning maneuvers or short sally-strikes to pluck insects. Its presence is often announced by its distinctive, buzzy, descending call, which is a key diagnostic feature used by birdwatchers to locate the species amid dense green vegetation.

Nesting: Breeding seasons vary geographically, occurring from March to July in Central and North America, and shifting to October through January in its South American range. The female constructs a compact, cup-shaped nest utilizing fine rootlets, lichens, mosses, and spider silk to bind the structure securely inside the fork of a slender twig, typically situated at heights ranging from 10 to 40 feet (3 to 12 meters) above the ground. The clutch consists of 2 to 3 cream-colored eggs heavily speckled with reddish-brown markings. Incubation lasts approximately 14 to 16 days and is performed almost exclusively by the female, although both parents actively participate in feeding the altricial nestlings.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is supported by its incredibly expansive geographic distribution, stable overall population trends, and high ecological tolerance to moderately degraded habitats, ensuring that it remains resilient despite ongoing localized deforestation across its Neotropical range.
