Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Represents a small to medium-sized nocturnal bird of prey, measuring between 20 and 24 centimeters in total length, and weighing approximately 115 to 160 grams. This taxon is morphologically characterized by a prominent dark facial disc outlined by a thin black border, and notable erectile ear tufts that are raised when the bird is alarmed or active. Its most defining diagnostic feature is a distinct blackish-brown crown, which creates a sharp contrast with the rest of its body plumage. It occurs in two main color morphs: a greyish-brown morph and a rufous morph. In both forms, the upperparts are intricately patterned with dark streaks, spots, and bark-like vermiculations, while the underparts are lighter, displaying bold longitudinal streaks crossed by fine horizontal bars. The eyes feature a deep brown to amber iris, which is highly distinctive among its congeners, and its legs are feathered down to the base of the grayish, sharply curved talons.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the central-eastern region of South America. Its geographic range is primarily concentrated in southeastern and southern Brazil (ranging from Bahia and Minas Gerais south to Rio Grande do Sul), extending westward into eastern Paraguay, and reaching its southernmost limit in the northeastern province of Misiones, Argentina.

Habitat: Strictly associated with the humid subtropical and tropical Atlantic Forest biome, occupying both pristine primary forests and mature secondary growth. It is also found in montane cloud forests, degraded woodland patches, and occasionally in timber plantations or forest edges near dense vegetation. It occurs from sea level up to elevations of 1200 meters, favoring the lower and middle forest strata where the dense canopy provides adequate cover from diurnal predators.

Feeding: Primarily an insectivore but exhibiting opportunistic carnivorous tendencies. Its diet is largely composed of large terrestrial and flying arthropods, such as beetles, moths, crickets, cicadas, spiders, and centipedes. It also opportunistically preys upon small vertebrates, including forest rodents, small passerine birds captured roosting at night, and occasionally amphibians like tree frogs and small reptiles. It hunts from low-perched vantage points, scanning the ground before dropping in a silent swoop to capture prey or taking insects on the wing.

Behavior: Possesses strictly nocturnal and crepuscular habits, remaining highly inactive during the day. During daylight hours, it roosts solitarily, perching motionless close to tree trunks within dense foliage, relying on its highly cryptic plumage to blend seamlessly with the bark. It becomes active shortly after dusk. It is a highly territorial species, utilizing vocalizations to defend its territory and maintain pair bonds; its primary call is a rapid, ascending trill of soft notes that gently tapers off at the end.

Nesting: Utilizes natural tree hollows or abandoned cavities excavated by woodpeckers of the family Picidae in mature, large-diameter trees. It does not introduce any nesting material to the cavity. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 pristine white eggs, which she incubates for approximately 26 to 28 days. During this period, the male is solely responsible for foraging and bringing food to the nest. Both parents participate in feeding the altricial chicks, which fledge and leave the nest cavity after about a month.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although it is relatively common in undisturbed tracts, local populations are increasingly threatened by the severe fragmentation and loss of the Atlantic Forest, which drastically limits the availability of mature nesting trees and degrades its overall foraging habitat.
