Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This medium-sized terrestrial bird belongs to one of the most ancient avian lineages in the Americas, presenting a robust, plump body shape with a total length ranging between 25 and 30 centimeters and a body weight of 350 to 550 grams. The plumage is dominantly rich chestnut-brown or reddish-brown on the upperparts, providing optimal camouflage among the dry leaves of the forest floor. The crown and hindneck display contrasting grayish tones, while the throat and breast transition to a lighter cinnamon-rufous coloration. The bill is relatively short, slightly decurved, and dusky in color, whereas the sturdy legs exhibit a distinctive yellowish-green or olive hue. Sexual dimorphism is practically indistinguishable to the naked eye, although females tend to be slightly larger and heavier than males.

Geographical distribution: The species is widely distributed across South America, occupying several disjunct and continuous populations within the Neotropical region. Its main stronghold is in eastern Brazil, stretching continuously from the state of Bahia down to Rio Grande do Sul. Additionally, its range extends into eastern Paraguay and the northeastern corner of Argentina, specifically within the humid forests of the Misiones province. Furthermore, separate populations occur along the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains, stretching through parts of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, where different subspecies have evolved in isolation.

Habitat: It is closely associated with the dense understory of primary and secondary humid forests, showing a strong preference for undisturbed subtropical and tropical broadleaf forests. In its eastern range, it is a characteristic inhabitant of the Atlantic Forest, while in the Andean region, it occupies montane cloud forests and humid foothills, spanning an elevational gradient from sea level up to 2,200 meters above sea level. It strictly avoids open pastures and heavily degraded areas, requiring a continuous canopy cover and dense patches of bamboo or thick leaf litter to forage and escape predators.

Feeding: This bird is an opportunistic omnivore with a diet highly adapted to the resources found in the terrestrial stratum of the forest. It feeds extensively on seeds, fallen fruits, berries, and soft plant shoots. This vegetative diet is supplemented with high-protein animal matter, actively preying upon a wide array of forest floor invertebrates, including beetles, ants, spiders, caterpillars, and small land snails. It utilizes its bill to vigorously scratch and toss aside damp leaf litter to uncover hidden food items.

Behavior: Exceptionally shy, secretive, and terrestrial, this species is far more often heard than seen in its natural environment. It prefers to walk stealthily through the undergrowth, freezing at the slightest sign of danger, and only taking flight as a last resort, performing a loud, sudden, and explosive flutter over short distances. Its activity patterns are primarily diurnal and crepuscular. Its presence is mostly revealed by its highly characteristic vocalization: a series of high-pitched, melancholic, tremulous whistles that are used for territorial defense and mate attraction.

Nesting: It exhibits a complex polygynandrous mating system where males assume all parental duties. The nest is a simple, shallow depression scraped directly into the ground, usually hidden beneath buttress roots, fallen logs, or dense ferns, lined sparsely with dry leaves. The female lays a clutch of glossy, porcelain-like eggs that exhibit a striking deep chocolate or purplish-wine color. The male alone incubates the eggs for a period of 19 to 21 days and subsequently guides, protects, and feeds the precocial chicks, which are capable of running and foraging shortly after hatching.

Conservation status: It is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, owing to its vast geographical range and stable overall population trend. However, local populations face severe threats from habitat fragmentation and deforestation caused by agricultural expansion and logging. Additionally, subsistence hunting and poaching remain significant pressures in various parts of its range, highlighting the importance of maintaining large, contiguous protected forest reserves to ensure its long-term survival.
