Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits a slender and typical Furnariid morphology, measuring approximately 14 to 15 centimeters in length and weighing around 12 to 15 grams. Its plumage is distinguished by a highly characteristic cephalic pattern, showing a streaked crown with black and buffy-white longitudinal lines, a morphologically defining trait of this taxon. A conspicuous white supercilium stands out against a dark eye-line. The upperparts are mostly greyish to olive-brown, while the wing coverts and tail are a bright rufous color, which contrasts sharply with the rest of the body. The underparts are pale greyish or whitish, often with a subtle buffy wash on the flanks. The bill is straight and slender, with a pinkish-flesh base on the lower mandible and a dark tip.

Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed across the southern cone of South America, spanning territories that range from central and southern Bolivia, western Paraguay, and the extreme south of Brazil (primarily in the state of Rio Grande do Sul), to a vast presence in Uruguay and much of northern and central Argentina, reaching as far south as Río Negro province in northern Patagonia.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits xerophytic ecosystems and open woodlands, adapting successfully to the dry Chaco ecoregion, shrubby savannas, semi-arid scrublands of the Monte, and transitional forests. It is also frequently observed in gallery forests, degraded woodlands, and agricultural areas with remnants of native vegetation, generally occurring from sea level up to 1500 meters of elevation, though it can reach higher altitudes in the Andean valleys of Bolivia.

Feeding: Is strictly insectivorous, with a diet comprising a wide variety of arthropods, including beetles, larvae, spiders, ants, and small hemipterans. It actively searches for food by inspecting tree bark, dry twigs, and foliage, using its sharp bill to pry prey out of small crevices.

Behavior: Moves in an extremely agile and acrobatic manner through the branches, often clinging upside down or hanging from the tips of twigs to forage. It is typically seen in pairs or small family groups, and frequently joins mixed-species feeding flocks with other ovenbirds and tyrant flycatchers. It has a distinctive vocalization consisting of a rapid, descending trill, used to maintain contact and defend territory against rivals.

Nesting: Builds a large, globular or oval nest that is remarkably bulky for the bird´s size, constructed with thorny twigs, plant fibers, lichens, and moss, suspended from outer branches of low shrubs or trees. The inner chamber is lined with softer materials such as feathers and animal hair. The clutch typically consists of 2 to 3 eggs, white or very pale greenish-white, which are incubated by both parents for approximately 15 to 16 days.

Conservation status: Is classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The populations of Cranioleuca pyrrhophia are considered stable due to its extensive range and its ability to tolerate moderate levels of habitat degradation, as long as sufficient shrubby patches remain for shelter and foraging.
