Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Yungas Flycatcher measuring approximately 16–18.5 cm in length. It has a slender silhouette, a relatively long tail, and a large head with a robust, relatively broad bill surrounded by conspicuous rictal bristles. The crown is blackish, slightly crested and erectile, contrasting with the sides of the head and the olive-brown back. The throat and upper breast are whitish to light gray, creating a marked contrast with the bright yellow belly and undertail coverts. The wings show subtle pale edges on the coverts and tertials but are virtually devoid of rufous tones, as is the tail, a feature that makes it easy to distinguish from other members of the genus. The legs are blackish gray, the iris is brown, and it has a thin whitish orbital ring. Both sexes are similar, while juveniles show duller and somewhat browner tones.

Geographic distribution: It is a widely distributed species in the Americas, with thirteen recognized subspecies ranging from the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America to much of South America. Throughout its extensive range, it occupies habitats from sea level to approximately 3,400 m above sea level, depending on the region and subspecies considered. In Argentina, it is represented by the subspecies Myiarchus tuberculifer atriceps, characteristic of the subtropical Andes and the southern Yungas. This form is distinguished by its intensely black crown and the almost complete absence of rufous coloration in the wings and tail. In Argentina, it occurs in the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, and Catamarca, where it is considered a resident species, although it may undertake local altitudinal movements within the Yungas.

Habitat: It inhabits Yungas forests and their edges, from foothill forests to upper montane forests, between approximately 400 and 2,000 m above sea level. It frequents the interior and edges of humid forests, clearings with scattered trees, secondary forests, and areas with abundant tree cover, where it generally moves through the middle and upper strata.

Diet: It feeds mainly on insects and other small arthropods, supplementing its diet with small fruits. It captures prey by inspecting leaves, branches, and twigs during short flights from a perch, or by making brief aerial sallies to catch insects in flight. It frequently joins mixed-species flocks with other insectivorous species, especially outside the breeding season.

Behavior: It is a rather discreet species, generally observed alone or in pairs. It often remains motionless for long periods on inner branches of the forest, from where it makes brief movements to forage. Its vocalization is one of the best ways to detect it: it produces a long, melancholy, plaintive whistle, as well as other short, high-pitched notes used as contact calls.

Nesting: It nests in natural tree cavities, holes in broken branches, or old cavities excavated by woodpeckers. The nest consists of a poorly defined cup made of plant fibers, twigs, dry leaves, and feathers, lined internally with hair and finer materials, occasionally including shed snake skin. The clutch consists of four to five cream-white eggs with abundant brown and purplish spots.

Conservation status: Considered Least Concern (LC) internationally. In Argentina, it has no national threat category. Although it has a broad distribution and may be relatively common in suitable habitats, it depends on the conservation of Yungas forests and the continuity of tree cover; therefore, the degradation and fragmentation of these environments could affect its populations locally.
