Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its slender body and small size ranging from 14 to 16 centimeters in total length, this passerine features a remarkably long, graduated tail with stiff, pointed feathers. Its most distinctive physical attribute is an elongated, erectile crest of blackish feathers edged with white. The upperparts are predominantly grayish-brown, while the wings present a striking contrast with warm rufous or cinnamon patches on the flight feathers. A broad, conspicuous whitish to pale buff supercilium extends behind the eye. The throat and upper breast display a finely streaked black-and-white pattern that transitions into a uniform buffy-ochre belly. The bill is short, thin, and slightly decurved, perfectly adapted for probing crevices.

Geographical distribution: Restricted as an endemic taxon to the south-central region of South America, this bird is strictly associated with the Atlantic Forest biome. Its range encompasses southeastern and southern Brazil, spanning from southern Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, through São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and down to Rio Grande do Sul. Additionally, its presence extends into northeastern Argentina, where it is exclusively found in the province of Misiones, following the remnant patches of its highly specialized native ecosystem.

Habitat: Strongly restricted to humid forests dominated by the Parana pine (Araucaria angustifolia), a plant community known as the Araucaria moist forests. This species is an obligate canopy and subcanopy specialist, spending almost its entire life cycle in the upper strata of these coniferous trees. It rarely descends to the understory or the ground, preferring the outer branches and needle-dense clusters of the mature pines, which provide both shelter and essential resources.

Feeding: Primarily insectivorous, its diet consists of small arthropods, spiders, caterpillars, aphids, and insect larvae found in the foliage and bark. Its foraging technique is highly active and acrobatic, as it systematically gleans prey from the needle-like leaves (acículas) of Araucaria trees. It frequently hangs upside down from the very tips of branches, inserting its fine bill into tight crevices and leaf sheaths with rapid, agile movements.

Behavior: Highly active, restless, and constantly in motion, this bird is typically observed during daylight hours. It usually travels in pairs or small family groups, frequently joining mixed-species flocks traveling through the forest canopy. Communication is maintained through high-pitched, metallic, buzzing trills emitted constantly to keep contact. Its flight is weak, short, and undulating, typically consisting of brief hops between the crowns of adjacent pine trees.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs primarily from spring to early summer, matching the peak abundance of prey. It constructs its nest hidden inside natural cavities, abandoned woodpecker holes, or thick clumps of epiphytes like bromeliads and mosses growing on the horizontal branches of Araucaria trees. The inner chamber of the nest is a neat cup lined with soft plant fibers, moss, and feathers. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 dull white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for approximately two weeks.

Conservation status: Classified globally as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Nevertheless, its population trend is decreasing and it remains highly vulnerable at the regional level due to its extreme habitat specialization. The historical and ongoing loss of Araucaria forests caused by logging, agricultural expansion, and habitat fragmentation poses a severe threat to its long-term survival, making the preservation of mature coniferous stands crucial.
