Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by its remarkably diminutive body size, this bird is widely recognized as the smallest representative of its family within the Americas. It measures approximately 21 to 27 cm in total length and weighs between 112 and 180 grams. The species exhibits a compact silhouette with a short, pointed, blackish bill tipped with white, and highly distinctive, intense golden-yellow eyes that contrast sharply with its plumage. During the breeding season, its overall plumage becomes a dark slate-gray, with the crown and throat turning nearly black. In contrast, the non-breeding plumage is considerably paler, featuring a whitish throat and light gray flanks, although the striking yellow iris remains constant throughout the year.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a vast geographic range throughout the Neotropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Its northernmost breeding populations are found in the extreme southern United States, primarily in southern Texas, extending southward through Mexico, Central America, and various islands of the Caribbean. In South America, it is widely distributed east of the Andes, ranging through Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and southward into northern Argentina and Uruguay, remaining mostly sedentary throughout its distribution.

Habitat: Inhabits a diverse array of freshwater and brackish lentic ecosystems. It shows a strong preference for permanent or ephemeral ponds, shallow lakes, marshes, roadside ditches, and slow-moving streams. The presence of dense emergent and floating vegetation, such as reeds, cattails, and water lilies, is a crucial habitat requirement, providing necessary cover from predators, foraging substrates, and structure for anchoring nests.

Feeding: Maintains an opportunistic carnivorous diet focused primarily on aquatic organisms. Its prey consists mainly of aquatic insects and their larvae, water bugs, beetles, small fish, freshwater crustaceans, spiders, and occasionally small amphibians. It captures its prey during quick, quiet underwater dives, using its lobed feet for propulsion, or by gleaning organisms directly from the surface of aquatic vegetation.

Behavior: Demonstrates extremely secretive and wary habits, preferring to remain concealed within littoral vegetation rather than swimming in open water. It is an exceptional diver; when threatened, it typically sinks slowly into the water, leaving only its eyes and nostrils exposed, or dives quietly to escape instead of taking flight. Like other members of its order, it frequently engages in the consumption of its own feathers, which form a protective plug in its stomach to prevent fish bones from puncturing the digestive tract. Its vocalizations include high-pitched, rhythmic trills that serve to maintain pair contact in dense habitats.

Nesting: Breeding activity can occur year-round, heavily influenced by local rainfall patterns and water level stability. Both parents cooperate to construct a floating nest, a platform composed of decaying aquatic vegetation that is securely anchored to living emergent plants. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 6 eggs, which are initially greenish-white but soon turn stained brown from contact with the damp, decaying nesting material. Both parents share the incubation duties for about 21 days. The precocial chicks hatch ready to swim, but they are frequently carried on the backs of the parents, snuggled safely within their feathers even while the adults dive.

Conservation status: Listed globally as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. While its overall populations are considered stable and its geographical range is vast, local populations face localized threats from habitat degradation, wetland drainage for agriculture, pollution from chemical runoff, urban development, and severe droughts exacerbated by regional climate change.
