Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits a slender and compact morphology characteristic of the Trochilidae family, with an average body length of 8 to 10 centimeters and a body mass ranging from 3 to 4 grams. The dorsal plumage displays a shimmering array of metallic green and bronze hues, while the ventral region is distinguished by a prominent, clean white median stripe extending down the center of the breast and belly, bordered by iridescent turquoise or green feathers. Its bill is moderately long, straight, and features a blackish maxilla with a contrasting pinkish-red base on the mandible tipped in black. The undertail coverts are whitish, and the tail is mostly bronzy-green with a dark subterminal band, creating a highly variable coloration that shifts dramatically under different lighting conditions.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a vast range across central and eastern South America. It is widely distributed throughout Brazil, from the dry northeastern caatinga to the southern subtropical forests, and extends westward into eastern Bolivia, central and northern Paraguay, and the northeastern provinces of Argentina (notably Misiones and Corrientes). Isolated populations and occasional records have also been documented in northern Uruguay and adjacent border regions, reflecting its significant latitudinal adaptability across diverse South American biomes.

Habitat: Shows a strong preference for semi-open areas, transitional zones, and disturbed environments rather than dense primary forests. It is commonly observed in humid forest edges, scrubby woodlands, cerrado savannas, secondary growth forests, and highly anthropized landscapes such as suburban gardens, city parks, and agricultural plantations. These open habitats provide optimal sunlight, which promotes the growth and flowering of the diverse understory vegetation upon which this bird relies.

Feeding: Sustains its high metabolic rate through a predominantly nectarivorous diet, supplemented by the consumption of small invertebrates. It visits a wide variety of flowering plants, showing a high affinity for species within the Bromeliaceae, Fabaceae, Rubiaceae, and Malvaceae families, inserting its bill to harvest nectar via capillary action. Additionally, it engages in aerial hawking and foliage gleaning to capture small insects and spiders, ensuring a vital source of protein and essential lipids required for its daily energetic demands.

Behavior: Demonstrates highly territorial and aggressive tendencies, actively defending rich nectar sources from both conspecifics and other hummingbird species. Its flight is incredibly agile and precise, characterized by rapid wingbeats that enable stationary hovering, vertical ascents, and backward maneuvers. It utters sharp, metallic vocalizations, particularly during territorial disputes or at dawn, when males sing from exposed perches in the mid-story to attract potential mates and establish dominance.

Nesting: Nesting responsibilities are undertaken exclusively by the female, who manages all aspects of reproduction and offspring care. She constructs a small, deep cup-shaped nest utilizing fine plant fibers, seed down, and soft mosses, all bound together with sticky spiderwebs to allow the structure to stretch as the chicks grow. The exterior of the nest is meticulously camouflaged with lichen flakes to blend in with the supporting branch, typically situated at a height of 2 to 5 meters above the ground. A standard clutch consists of two white eggs, which the female incubates for about 14 to 16 days. The hatchlings are altricial and are fed via regurgitation until they fledge at approximately three weeks of age.

Conservation status: Categorized as a species of Least Concern (LC)** on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it faces localized pressures from habitat fragmentation and deforestation driven by agricultural expansion, its ecological plasticity allows it to adapt successfully to human-altered environments, maintaining stable population trends across its extensive distribution range.
