Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Vulnerable

Description

Stands as one of the most striking and robust wading birds inhabiting the montane wetlands of South America, reaching heights between 102 and 110 centimeters. Its plumage is predominantly a delicate pale pink, accented by vivid wine-pink highlights on the upper chest, neck, and wing coverts. A key morphological identifier is its heavy, deeply curved bill, which is bright yellow at the base and black on the outer half. Unlike other related species, it exhibits bright yellow legs and feet and completely lacks a hallux (hind toe), an anatomical adaptation that facilitates muddy substrate movement. When wings are folded, a prominent black triangle formed by its primary flight feathers is highly visible, contrasting sharply with its pastel body coloration.

Geographical distribution: Restricted to the high-altitude regions of the Andean Altiplano, its breeding range spans southern Peru, western Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina. In response to winter freezing of high-altitude bodies of water, populations perform seasonal altitudinal migrations, dispersing to lowland wetlands such as Mar Chiquita lake in central Argentina, where they seek milder thermal conditions.

Habitat: Confined almost exclusively to high-Andean wetlands, specifically shallow, alkaline, and hypersaline lakes situated at elevations ranging from 3,500 to 4,500 meters above sea level. These severe environments, characterized by arid soils, high ultraviolet radiation, and intense daily temperature fluctuations, foster the specific microalgae blooms essential for the species´ survival.

Feeding: Functions as a highly specialized filter-feeding specialist, processing water and sediment through a specialized bill. The interior of the mandibles is equipped with fine, dense filtering lamellae designed to capture microscopic particles. Its diet relies heavily on benthic diatoms, particularly from the genus Surirella, along with other unicellular algae and tiny organic particles gathered by sweeping its head side to side through the shallow mud.

Behavior: Displays a deeply gregarious lifestyle, establishing dense communal flocks for foraging, roosting, and breeding activities. The species is renowned for its spectacular, synchronized courtship displays, which include collective "marching" maneuvers, wing saluting, and rapid head-turning rituals. It exhibits high mobility, undertaking swift, nocturnal flights over mountainous terrain to locate favorable feeding sites as water levels fluctuate.

Nesting: Initiates its colonial breeding activities during the austral spring and summer, primarily from November to February. Breeding pairs build conical mud nests reaching heights of 25 to 31 centimeters above the shallow water line, protecting them from terrestrial predators. Females deposit a single, chalky-white egg, which both parents incubate for an interval of 27 to 31 days. Upon hatching, the grey-downed chicks gather into large communal groups called creches, supervised by a small number of sentinel adults while parents forage.

Conservation status: Classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. The most critical threats to its persistence include habitat degradation caused by lithium and mineral mining operations, which divert scarce water resources from delicate Altiplano basins. Additionally, disturbances from unregulated tourist operations, historical egg-collecting practices, and the intensifying drying trends driven by global climate change pose severe challenges to the recruitment and survival of future generations.
