Description

Small Yungas Wren of approximately 10.5–11 cm in length, with a compact appearance and short tail, often held somewhat upright. The upperparts are tawny brown to rufous brown, including the crown, while the wings and tail show fine dark barring. The underparts are pale cream to light beige. Its most distinctive feature is a prominent white or whitish eyebrow extending behind the eye, contrasting with the dark brown ear coverts. The bill is slender, dark gray to blackish, and the legs are grayish to grayish brown. The subspecies occurring in Argentina is characterized by a whiter eyebrow and less reddish upperparts. The sexes are similar. Juveniles are duller, with a less conspicuous eyebrow and grayish underparts. It may be superficially confused with the House Wren (Troglodytes aedon), although the latter has a much less conspicuous eyebrow, a relatively longer tail, and, although it can also be found in the Yungas, it does not show the strong association with montane forest environments characteristic of the White-browed Wren.

Geographic distribution: It has a broad distribution along the Andes, from Venezuela and Colombia to northwestern Argentina, with five subspecies recognized. The subspecies solitarius occurs in Colombia and western Venezuela; solstitialis from southern Colombia to northwestern Peru; macrourus in eastern Peru; frater in southeastern Peru and Bolivia; while auricularis, known only from Argentina, occurs in the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, and Catamarca. It mainly inhabits elevations between 1,400 and 3,500 m above sea level, although at the southernmost limit of its range it may descend to approximately 700 m in elevation.

Habitat: A characteristic inhabitant of the Yungas, especially montane rainforest and montane woodland. It frequents humid understory, dense shrubs, vines, areas with abundant epiphytes, and moss-covered forests. It may also be found along forest edges and in areas with bamboo-like vegetation, showing a preference for humid environments with abundant plant cover.

Diet: It feeds mainly on small arthropods, including insects, spiders, and their larvae. It actively forages among low vegetation, vines, moss-covered trunks, and branches, moving by means of small hops and brief climbs. It fairly frequently joins mixed-species flocks of insectivorous species.

Behavior: A very active and restless species, it constantly moves through dense understory, where it often remains partially concealed. Despite this, it is relatively easy to detect because of its frequent vocalizations. Its song consists of a complex series of high-pitched, bell-like notes, while its calls include characteristic harsh and dry sounds. It is generally observed in pairs or small family groups and fairly frequently as part of mixed-species flocks.

Nesting: It nests mainly between September and February. It builds a bulky nest made of roots, plant fibers, mosses, and dry leaves, generally located in natural cavities, tree hollows, or among dense vegetation. The clutch consists of four to five whitish eggs with brownish spots, especially concentrated toward one of the poles.

Conservation status: It is categorized as Not Threatened (NA) at the national level and as Least Concern (LC) internationally. Although its distribution in Argentina is restricted to the Yungas, it is locally common and even abundant in suitable environments. The degradation and fragmentation of montane forests constitute its main potential threat.
