Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belonging to the genus Claravis, this small columbid is characterized by a pronounced sexual dimorphism, measuring between 18 and 21 centimeters in total length and weighing approximately 65 to 75 grams. The adult male features a distinctive pale blue-grey plumage across the upperparts, transitioning to an almost white coloration on the throat and lower belly; its wings are adorned with prominent dark blue or violet-black spots that form diagnostic bars, and the outer tail feathers are black. Conversely, the female displays an overall brownish-grey or cinnamon hue, with a warm reddish-brown or chestnut coloration on the rump and central tail feathers, complemented by dark cinnamon wing spots. Both sexes possess a striking red to orange iris, a greenish-grey bill with a darker tip, and pale pink legs and feet.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely throughout the Neotropical region, ranging from southern Mexico (specifically the Gulf coast and the Yucatan Peninsula) southwards through Central America into vast areas of South America. Its southern limits extend to northern Argentina, eastern Paraguay, and southern Brazil, while its distribution also encompasses Andean nations such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and the Guianas. Despite this extensive range, its distribution can be highly localized depending on the availability of suitable undisturbed habitats.

Habitat: Primarily frequents the understory and borders of humid tropical and subtropical forests, as well as secondary growth forests, woodland clearings, forest edges, and agricultural lands with adjacent tree cover. It is regularly observed in gallery forests and riparian thickets, spanning an altitudinal range from sea level up to approximately 1200 meters, although occasionally found at higher elevations in specific inter-Andean valleys.

Feeding: Sustains itself on a strictly granivorous diet, feeding on a wide variety of grass seeds and herbaceous plant seeds gathered directly from the forest floor. This diet is supplemented by fallen wild berries, small fruits, and occasionally tiny invertebrates extracted from the leaf litter. Foraging activity occurs almost exclusively on the ground, usually in pairs or small family groups under the protective shade of the lower canopy.

Behavior: Exhibits shy and highly terrestrial habits, spending the majority of the day walking quietly through the undergrowth in search of food. When startled, it flushes suddenly, undertaking a fast, low, and direct flight that produces a noticeable whistling sound with its wings as it seeks refuge within thick foliage. While typically encountered singly or in pairs, individuals may temporarily gather at water sources or abundant feeding sites. The advertising call is a soft, rhythmic, and repetitive "coo-coo" vocalized from well-concealed perches.

Nesting: Breeding seasons vary geographically, typically coinciding with the local rainy seasons when food resources are most abundant. The nest is a remarkably fragile, flat platform composed of fine twigs, dry petioles, and rootlets, built at heights ranging from 1 to 5 meters above the ground in dense bushes, vines, or low tree branches. A typical clutch consists of two glossy white eggs. Both parents share incubation duties for a period of 13 to 14 days and cooperate in feeding the altricial chicks with a nutrient-rich secretion known as crop milk.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it remains relatively common across its extensive range, local populations are increasingly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, severe deforestation driven by agricultural expansion, and the degradation of native forest understories.
