Description

This is a medium-sized, slender raptor belonging to the family Accipitridae, characterized by its exceptionally graceful flight, measuring 12 to 14.5 inches in length with a wingspan of 30 to 35 inches and a weight ranging from 7.5 to 13.4 ounces. Adults feature a predominantly slate-gray dorsum, contrasted by a distinctly paler gray head and underparts. The long, pointed wings exhibit a clear black flight feather coloration with a translucent white patch on the trailing edge of the inner wing. The tail is long, square-tipped, and solid black. Their striking eyes possess a brilliant ruby-red iris surrounded by a dark facial mask. Juveniles present a highly contrasting appearance, being heavily streaked with brown and white on the chest, having banded tails, and dark brownish eyes.

Geographical distribution: It is a long-distance neotropical migratory species. Its breeding range is located in the central and southern United States, stretching from the southern Great Plains to the southeastern states and the Gulf Coast. During the autumn, large flocks migrate southwards through Central America to spend the winter months in the subtropical and temperate regions of South America, including northern Argentina, Paraguay, southern Brazil, and eastern Bolivia.

Habitat: It primarily occupies mature deciduous forests, riparian woodlands, oak savannas, and open forest edges adjacent to prairies or agricultural fields. In recent decades, this raptor has remarkably adapted to human-modified landscapes, frequently settling in suburban areas, golf courses, city parks, and university campuses containing mature, tall trees suitable for nesting and foraging.

Feeding: Its diet is highly insectivorous. It feeds primarily on large flying insects such as dragonflies, grasshoppers, cicadas, beetles, and wasps, which are expertly caught and eaten mid-air. On occasion, it opportunistically preys upon small vertebrates, including lizards, small frogs, snakes, bats, and small songbirds or rodents.

Behavior: It is renowned for its buoyant, effortless, and highly acrobatic flight, using thermals to glide gracefully over tree canopies. It exhibits a highly social nature, forming loose nesting colonies and migrating in massive flocks that can number hundreds of individuals. They are cooperative and generally peaceful birds, showing very little territorial aggressiveness toward neighboring pairs or other non-threatening species.

Nesting: Monogamous pairs form shortly after arriving at the breeding grounds in late spring. Together, they construct a shallow platform nest made of twigs, which is continually lined with fresh green leaves, usually placed in the upper canopy of a mature deciduous tree. The clutch consists of 1 to 3 bluish-white eggs incubated by both parents for 30 to 32 days. The young are altricial and receive intensive care from both parents, sometimes aided by non-breeding helpers, eventually fledging at 30 to 35 days after hatching.

Conservation status: It is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Its global population is steadily increasing, largely aided by the species´ high adaptability to suburban green spaces and tree plantings in previously treeless plains, and it remains protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
