Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This medium-sized nocturnal bird belongs to the family Caprimulgidae and is highly recognized for its exceptional camouflage and cryptic behavior. Adults typically measure between 25 and 30 centimeters (9.8 to 11.8 inches) in length and weigh around 80 to 120 grams. Their plumage is characterized by a rich, warm rufous-brown coloration, intricately patterned with blackish streaks, buff, and cinnamon mottling that perfectly mimics dead leaves and forest floor debris. It features a broad, flattened head with large dark eyes adapted for low-light vision, exhibiting a bright reddish-orange eyeshine when illuminated. The bill is extremely small, but it opens into an enormous, wide gape lined with long, stiff rictal bristles that assist in capturing flying insects. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: males display distinct white spots on the tips of the outer tail feathers, which are either buffy-cinnamon or completely absent in females.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the Neotropical region. Its range extends from southern Costa Rica and Panama through northern South America, including Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas, and reaches southward through the Amazon basin in Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. Although its distribution can be patchy, it is considered a resident species throughout most of its range, with no major migratory patterns documented, though minor seasonal altitudinal or local movements may occur.

Habitat: This species primarily occupies lowland areas and foothill forests, generally below 1000 meters (3300 feet) in elevation. It shows a strong preference for humid forest edges, deciduous and semi-deciduous woodlands, secondary growth forests, gallery forests, wooded savannas, and shaded plantations such as coffee farms. It generally avoids dense, undisturbed primary forest interiors, favoring ecotones where the canopy is slightly open, allowing for a well-developed leaf litter layer and scattered understory vegetation.

Feeding: It is an aerial insectivore that hunts exclusively during twilight and night hours. Its diet consists of large flying insects, primarily coleopterans (beetles), lepidopterans (moths), orthopterans (crickets and grasshoppers), and hymenopterans (winged ants and wasps). The bird utilizes a sit-and-wait foraging strategy, perching on low branches or directly on the ground. From these vantage points, it performs quick, silent, and highly agile aerial sallies to snatch prey mid-air, utilizing its wide mouth to engulf insects effortlessly.

Behavior: During the day, it remains completely inactive, roosting on the ground among fallen leaves or perched horizontally on low branches, relying entirely on its superb camouflage to remain undetected by predators. Activity begins abruptly at dusk. Males are highly territorial during the breeding season, uttering a loud, repetitive, and rhythmic song described as a persistent "jo-jo-jo-co-co" or "chuck-will´s-widow" type of call, which is performed continuously from elevated perches or the ground, especially on clear, moonlit nights to defend territory and attract mates.

Nesting: This bird does not construct any physical nest structure. Eggs are laid directly on the ground, placed on a flat layer of dry leaf litter, usually under the protective shade of a shrub or small tree to prevent overheating and predation. The typical clutch consists of two eggs that are creamy-white or pale buff, heavily blotched with reddish-brown, lilac, and grey markings that blend seamlessly with the forest floor. Both parents share incubation duties, which last about 18 to 21 days. The female incubates predominantly during the day, relying on her cryptic plumage, while the male takes over at night. The chicks are semialtricial, hatched with a dense cover of cinnamon-colored down, and are capable of moving short distances away from the nest site within days if threatened.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it has a very wide geographic distribution and stable population trends globally, local populations face ongoing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion, cattle ranching, and urbanization, which reduce suitable nesting grounds and decrease the abundance of large nocturnal insects.
