Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Is a large, cursorial bird reaching a height of 75 to 90 centimeters and weighing between 1.5 and 2.2 kilograms. It presents a brownish-gray plumage delicately vermiculated with darker tones. This taxon is easily distinguished by its long neck, elongated legs of a striking bright coral-red, and a long, banded tail tipped with white. At the base of its bright red bill, a prominent, permanent frontal crest of stiff, forward-pointing feathers measuring up to 10 centimeters is displayed. The eyes feature a distinctive pale yellow iris, bordered by a bare patch of bluish skin.

Geographical distribution: Occurs across a vast range in central and eastern South America, spanning from northeastern Brazil (including states like Maranhão, Ceará, and Bahia) southward through eastern Bolivia, the entire territory of Paraguay, into northern and central Argentina (extending as far south as La Pampa and Buenos Aires provinces), and reaching northwestern Uruguay.

Habitat: Prefers open and semi-open biomes, demonstrating a strong affinity for the Cerrado, Caatinga, and Chaco ecoregions, as well as shrubby savannas, grasslands, agricultural fields, and degraded pastures. Although heavily adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle, it relies on scattered trees, gallery forests, or thorny scrublands for roosting, escaping predators, and building nests, completely avoiding dense tropical rainforests and closed-canopy woodlands.

Feeding: Is an opportunistic omnivore with a highly predatory disposition. Its diet consists of a wide variety of large invertebrates, particularly grasshoppers, beetles, and spiders, alongside small vertebrates such as lizards, snakes (including venomous species), rodents, frogs, and small birds. It also consumes plant matter, including wild fruits, seeds, and agricultural grains. Its hunting strategy is remarkably aggressive: it seizes prey in its bill and violently beats it against rocks or hard ground to dispatch and soften it before consumption.

Behavior: Displays primarily diurnal and terrestrial habits, possessing a remarkable running ability that allows it to reach speeds of up to 25 kilometers per hour instead of flying when threatened. Flight is restricted to short bursts for ascending to night roosts or escaping imminent danger. The species is renowned for its loud, far-reaching vocalizations—a series of yelping and laughing calls that can be heard up to two kilometers away, often performed as territorial duets at dawn.

Nesting: Establishes a bulky platform nest constructed from twigs, sticks, and mud, sometimes lined with dry leaves or cattle dung. The nest is typically positioned at low heights, between 1 and 5 meters above the ground, in the fork of a low tree or thorny bush. The clutch typically consists of two eggs (occasionally three) which are chalky white or yellowish, speckled with reddish-brown and purple spots. Both parents participate in incubation for 24 to 30 days and cooperatively rear the semi-precocial chicks, which leave the nest structure after approximately two weeks.

Conservation status: Is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The species Cariama cristata has adapted remarkably well to human-modified landscapes and has expanded its range due to deforestation and the creation of cattle pastures. Nonetheless, localized threats persist, primarily involving habitat degradation through intensive agriculture, the widespread use of chemical pesticides, and collisions with vehicles on expanding road networks.
