Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Features a slender and robust silhouette, with an approximate body length of 16 centimeters. The dorsal plumage is characterized by a uniform dark brown coloration, which contrasts sharply with a prominent, highly visible white supercilium extending above its dark eyes. Its throat is immaculately white, a coloration that gradually transitions into grayish and pale brown tones across the breast and abdomen, displaying subtle, faint streaking. The folded wings reveal a distinctive rufous or cinnamon wingband that becomes highly conspicuous during flight, while the dark tail features outer feathers tipped with whitish patches. Its bill is dark grey to black, relatively long, and slightly decurved, which is an evolutionary adaptation for probing mud and rocky crevices.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a highly restricted endemic range in central Argentina, specifically confined to the mountain ranges of the Sierras de Córdoba and the Sierras de San Luis. During the harsh winter months, some populations undergo altitudinal migration, descending to lower elevations and nearby valleys within these provinces to escape the freezing conditions of the summits.

Habitat: Occurs predominantly in high-altitude grasslands and rocky montane steppes associated with the Sierras Pampeanas, generally spanning an altitudinal range between 1,500 and 2,800 meters above sea level. This passerine is closely linked to fast-flowing, pristine mountain streams, rocky ravines, and humid meadows dominated by bunchgrasses of the genus Festuca.

Feeding: Relies on a strictly insectivorous diet, feeding on a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates. Its prey includes beetles, flies, aquatic insect larvae found beneath stream pebbles, spiders, and small terrestrial snails. It utilizes its curved bill to flip small stones, probe moist soils, and clear moss from rocky surfaces near water margins.

Behavior: Exhibits highly active and predominantly terrestrial habits, frequently seen hopping rapidly along rocks and wet shorelines. It performs a characteristic body and tail-bobbing motion, raising its wings in a display known as "remolinar" which is common among members of its genus. It is typically found singly or in territorial pairs, and it often perches on prominent boulders to deliver a loud, trilling territorial call.

Nesting: Occurs exclusively during the southern spring and summer, from October to January. The nest is placed in deep crevices, including fissures in rock faces, burrows excavated in earthen banks, or cavities beneath large boulders. The structure is a well-crafted cup composed of dry grasses, moss, and fine roots, lined internally with mammal hair and avian feathers for thermal insulation. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 pure white eggs, which are incubated by both parents.

Conservation status: Is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, as its population trends remain relatively stable. However, because Cinclodes olrogi has an extremely restricted global range, it is considered a species of conservation concern in Argentina, where its fragile habitat faces threats from cattle overgrazing, water source degradation, and frequent anthropogenic wildfires.
