Description

Features an extremely elongated, limbless body that strongly resembles a snake, though it retains tiny, flap-like vestigial hind limbs located near the vent. The dorsal coloration ranges from bronze and olive-brown to grayish tones, adorned with distinctive dark longitudinal stripes running along the length of the body and sides. The ventral surface is significantly lighter, often showing pale blue, yellowish, or grayish hues. Unlike snakes, this reptile possesses movable eyelids and lacks the wide ventral scales typical of serpents. The snout-vent length of this member of the Ophiodes intermedius group typically ranges between 4.7 and 6.5 inches (120 to 165 mm), with a tail that is remarkably long and highly fragile, breaking easily when grabbed.

Geographical distribution Occupies a wide territorial range across south-central South America. It is natively found in the central and northern provinces of Argentina, stretching across the entirety of Uruguay, extending into southern and central Paraguay, and reaching deep into southern and southeastern Brazil, particularly in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, and São Paulo.

Habitat: Primarily populates open formations and grassland ecosystems, including the Pampas biome, the shrubby savannas of the Chaco, and the edges of the Cerrado. Species within this Ophiodes complex are highly adapted to terrestrial microhabitats, sheltering beneath decaying logs, flat rocks, heavy leaf litter, or embedded within dense clumps of native grasses where soil moisture is conserved.

Feeding Exhibits a strictly carnivorous and insectivorous diet, preying upon a variety of small soil-dwelling invertebrates. It actively feeds on spiders, crickets, beetles, lepidopteran larvae, and small earthworms. Using its notched tongue to gather chemical cues from the environment, it detects prey through its vomeronasal organ and captures them with quick lateral strikes.

Behavior: Displays diurnal and crepuscular activity patterns, leading a highly secretive and semi-fossorial lifestyle that makes detection difficult. It moves with an agile, serpentine lateral undulation through thick grass and loose topsoil. When threatened by predators, it utilizes caudal autotomy as a primary defense mechanism, shedding its tail to create a thrashing distraction while the head and torso escape into safety.

Reproduction Follows a viviparous reproductive strategy, with females giving birth to fully developed, live offspring rather than laying eggs. Mating takes place during the spring, followed by a gestation period that culminates in the summer months when the female gives birth to a litter of 4 to 12 young. These neonates are immediately self-sufficient and show a striking striping pattern.

Conservation status Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) in most global assessments due to its wide distribution. However, local populations face significant threats from habitat fragmentation and loss driven by soybean cultivation, cattle ranching, and urban expansion, alongside direct persecution by humans who frequently mistake this harmless lizard for a venomous snake.
