Description


Characterized by its small size within its avian family (Chloroceryle americana), this species measures between 7.5 and 8.5 inches (19 to 22 centimeters) in length and weighs approximately 29 to 40 grams. It displays a dark bottle-green or olive-green upper plumage, adorned with small, delicate white speckles on the wings and tail feathers. A striking sexual dimorphism is evident in the breast coloration: males possess a broad, rich rufous band across the chest, whereas females lack this reddish tone, instead showing one or two narrow, speckled dark green bands across a white underbelly. Both sexes share a prominent white collar around the neck and a long, dagger-like black bill that is highly specialized for plunge-diving.

Geographical distribution: Occurs across a massive range in the Americas, stretching from the southernmost tip of the United States (specifically southern Texas) and northern Mexico, southward through Central America to South America. On the South American continent, it is widely distributed east of the Andes, ranging down to central Argentina, Uruguay, and throughout most of Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador.

Habitat: Primarily frequents shallow, slow-moving freshwater systems sheltered by dense overhanging vegetation. It is commonly observed along forested streams, small rivers, mangrove swamps, quiet lakeshores, and irrigation ditches. The presence of low branches, exposed roots, or rocks near the water´s surface is crucial, as these elements provide essential hunting perches and protection from aerial predators.

Feeding: Sustains itself on a diet composed mainly of small fish, which it captures close to the surface. It also consumes aquatic invertebrates, such as small freshwater shrimp, and various aquatic insects and their larvae. Hunting is done from a low perch just inches above the water, from which the bird plunges headfirst into the water to seize its prey with its bill.

Behavior: Typically lives a solitary life or remains in monogamous pairs during the breeding season. It is known for its fast, low, and direct flight path just above the water surface, characterized by rapid wingbeats. It frequently utters a sharp, metallic clicking sound resembling a "tik" or "cheep," especially when startled or defending its feeding territory. When perched, it displays a characteristic behavior of bobbing its head and wagging its tail up and down.

Nesting: Both male and female participate in excavating a nesting burrow into a vertical, sandy, or clay riverbank. This horizontal tunnel typically ranges from 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 centimeters) in length and ends in a rounded nesting chamber. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 6 glossy white eggs. Both parents share incubation duties for about 19 to 22 days, and both actively feed the altricial, featherless chicks until they fledge and become independent.

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population is considered stable due to its vast geographical range, localized populations remain vulnerable to the loss of riparian vegetation, water pollution, and siltation of water bodies, which directly impact its hunting efficiency.
