Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird measuring between 14.5 and 16 inches (37 to 41 centimeters) in length and weighing from 14 to 28 ounces (400 to 800 grams). It displays a plump, rounded body outline crowned by a long, slender, and forward-curving dark grey crest. Its plumage is highly cryptic, composed of a complex pattern of greyish-brown, buff, white, and black barrings and spots that provide exceptional camouflage on the dusty forest floor. Two distinct, vertical whitish stripes run down the sides of its neck from behind the eyes. The legs are bluish-grey and uniquely feature only three front toes, completely lacking the hind toe (hallux), which is an evolutionary adaptation to terrestrial locomotion.

Geographical distribution: It is endemic to the southern cone of South America, primarily distributed throughout the territory of Argentina, where it ranges from the dry northern woodlands down to the cold steppes of Patagonia. It is especially common in provinces such as La Pampa, Mendoza, San Luis, Córdoba, and Chubut. Additionally, introduced or localized peripheral populations exist in southern Chile, particularly in the steppe habitats of the Aisén region, defining a distribution closely linked to arid and semi-arid climatic zones.

Habitat: This bird primarily occupies arid and semi-arid ecosystems, such as xerophytic shrublands, dry grasslands, and the Monte desert ecoregion. It is also found in degraded savannas, pastures, and agricultural edges. It prefers flat or gently rolling terrains featuring scattered shrub cover, which offers vital protection from aerial and terrestrial predators. Its altitudinal range extends from sea level up to approximately 8,200 feet (2,500 meters) elevation.

Feeding: It is an opportunistic omnivore with a diet that shifts significantly depending on seasonal food availability. It feeds on a diverse range of plant matter, including seeds, young shoots, leaves, wild fruits, and tubers that it uncovers by scratching the soil. During the spring and summer breeding seasons, it increases its protein intake by actively hunting invertebrates, consuming large quantities of beetles, ants, caterpillars, and grasshoppers found within the ground vegetation.

Behavior: Highly terrestrial in nature, it spends almost all of its time walking with slow, deliberate steps, although it can run with remarkable speed when threatened. Flight is weak, noisy, and used only as an explosive, short-distance escape mechanism of last resort. Outside the breeding season, individuals gather in cohesive social groups or coveys that can range from a few birds to dozens. Its vocalizations are distinct, consisting of a plaintive, three-syllable whistle emitted mostly during dawn and dusk to maintain contact among group members and advertise territory boundaries.

Nesting: It possesses a complex breeding system characterized by sequential polyandry and polygyny. The male is solely responsible for selecting the nesting site and constructing a shallow scrape on the ground, lined with dry grass and twigs, typically hidden under a thorny bush. Multiple females will lay eggs in a single nest, leading to communal clutches of 6 to 12 eggs. These eggs are famous for their brilliant glossy green or olive-green color, resembling polished porcelain. The male incubates the eggs alone for approximately 20 to 21 days and subsequently raises the precocial chicks without any maternal assistance.

Conservation status: It is classified under the category of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population is considered stable and it remains common across much of its historical range, local populations face threats from habitat fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion, overgrazing by livestock, and unregulated recreational and subsistence hunting in several provinces.
