Description

The Gray-breasted Martin is a large swallow with a robust build and an aerodynamic silhouette, measuring between 18 and 20 cm (7.1–7.9 in) in length. Adults have glossy bluish-black upperparts, including the head and wings, with a metallic sheen. The underparts are predominantly white, contrasting with the grayish breast and flanks. The bill is short, broad at the base, and black, while the wings are long and pointed, well adapted for fast, sustained flight. The tail is moderately forked, a feature that is especially noticeable in flight. Females are generally slightly duller than males, with less glossy plumage and a more gradual transition between the grayish breast and the white belly. Juveniles have duller, browner plumage with little metallic gloss and grayish to whitish underparts.

Geographical distribution: Widely distributed throughout the Neotropics, its range extends from northern Mexico (specifically southern Sinaloa and Tamaulipas) southward through Central America to South America, reaching central Argentina and Uruguay. It is a partially migratory species; populations breeding in the southern limits of South America migrate northward toward the Amazon basin during the austral winter, whereas those inhabiting equatorial regions and Central America remain as year-round residents.

Habitat: Thrives primarily in open and semi-open landscapes, demonstrating a remarkable tolerance for human disturbance and a clear preference for urban areas, towns, suburbs, and agricultural lands. It is a common sight in city parks, plazas, and around structures like bridges. In more natural settings, it is closely associated with water bodies such as slow-moving rivers, lakes, marshes, and forest clearings, typically occupying lowlands and foothills from sea level up to 1,500 meters above sea level.

Feeding: It is an aerial insectivore, capturing its prey exclusively on the wing with rapid, agile aerial maneuvers. Its diet consists of a diverse range of flying insects, including beetles, winged ants, wasps, flies, dragonflies, and termites during mass emergences. It often hunts in pairs or large monospecific flocks, frequently foraging at high altitudes over forest canopies or urban skylines, riding thermal updrafts to intercept prey over extensive areas.

Behavior: Highly gregarious, this species regularly gathers in large flocks, particularly during the non-breeding season. They spend significant portions of the day perched on telephone wires, TV antennas, and building ledges, communicating through a series of rich, musical gurgling notes and dry, metallic chatters. They are powerful flyers, characterized by a pattern of rapid wingbeats interspersed with long, sweeping glides. At dusk, they assemble in spectacular communal roosts, sometimes numbering thousands of individuals, in large city trees or urban structures.

Nesting: Breeds either solitarily or in loose, scattered colonies. It relies heavily on artificial cavities for nest placement, utilizing spaces under roof tiles, cracks in concrete walls, weep holes in bridges, or artificial nest boxes. In natural environments, it nests in abandoned woodpecker holes or hollow trees. The nest is a shallow cup constructed from dry twigs, straw, grass, and occasionally green leaves, sometimes reinforced with small amounts of mud. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 6 white eggs. Incubation, performed almost exclusively by the female, lasts between 15 and 16 days. Both parents actively participate in feeding the altricial chicks and defending the nest territory, with the young fledging after approximately 26 to 28 days.

Conservation status: Currently classified as Least Concern (LC)** on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Its population is stable, and it has adapted exceptionally well to anthropogenic changes, as the expansion of cities and agricultural land has increased both nesting opportunities and open foraging grounds across its vast geographic range.
