Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a medium-sized and strikingly colored picid characterized by its multicolored plumage, which makes it one of the most visually distinct members of its genus. It measures approximately 18 to 20 centimeters in length and weighs between 50 and 65 grams. The facial and throat pattern is highly diagnostic, featuring a bright golden-yellow forehead and throat that contrasts sharply with the rest of the head. Sexual dimorphism is evident in the crown coloration: males possess an intense red crown and nape, whereas females exhibit a deep bluish-black crown while retaining the red color only on the nape. The mantle and back are mostly glossy black with a bluish sheen, which contrasts beautifully with a conspicuous white rump that becomes highly visible during flight. The breast is primarily olive-greenish, transitioning into a vibrant scarlet-red belly and heavily barred flanks of black and white. Its bill is strong, straight, and black, perfectly adapted for excavating wood.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the central-eastern regions of South America. Its primary range covers eastern Brazil, stretching from the state of Bahia southward to Rio Grande do Sul. Additionally, its distribution extends westward into eastern Paraguay and reaches the northeastern tip of Argentina, specifically within the Misiones province.

Habitat: It is closely associated with the Atlantic Forest biome, demonstrating a versatile preference for various wooded environments. It inhabits lowland humid forests, forest edges, mature secondary forests, and gallery forests. Notably, it exhibits high tolerance to human-altered landscapes, frequently occurring in suburban parks, wooded gardens, orchards, and agricultural zones with scattered tall trees, provided there are dead tree trunks available for nesting and foraging.

Feeding: It has a highly omnivorous and opportunist diet, showing a stronger tendency toward frugivory than most other woodpeckers. It consumes a wide variety of fleshy fruits, berries, and seeds, supplementing its diet with insects such as ants, termites, beetles, and their wood-boring larvae. It also feeds on flower nectar and tree sap by making small incisions in the bark. It is known to store seeds and small fruits in bark crevices or cavities, creating small larder hoards for future consumption.

Behavior: It is remarkably social, which is an unusual trait among woodpecker species. It is typically seen in active family groups of three to ten individuals that communicate constantly through loud, metallic, and rhythmic vocalizations. Active during the day, it moves agilely through the canopy and mid-story of forests. The group often practices sentinel behavior, with some individuals keeping watch for aerial or terrestrial predators while other members forage.

Nesting: Its reproductive strategy is defined by a cooperative breeding system where a dominant breeding pair receives help from auxiliary group members, typically offspring from previous clutches. Both sexes, along with the helpers, excavate a cavity in dead wood or decaying branches of tall trees, usually at heights ranging from 3 to 12 meters above the ground. The female lays two to four shiny white eggs directly on the wood chips at the bottom of the chamber. Incubation lasts about 12 to 14 days and is shared by the parents and helpers, who also cooperate in feeding, cleaning, and defending the chicks until they fledge around 30 days after hatching.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although its population is considered stable due to its adaptability to fragmented and semi-urban habitats, the ongoing loss and degradation of the Atlantic Forest due to agricultural expansion and logging remains a long-term threat to the genetic connectivity of its populations.
