Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

As one of the smallest and most distinctive members of the woodpecker family (Picidae), this taxon reaches an average length of 9 to 10 centimeters and weighs between 9 and 11 grams. A primary diagnostic feature is the prominent ochre or cinnamon-colored collar that wraps around its hindneck, distinguishing it from sympatric congeners. Sexual dimorphism is clearly visible in the crown ornamentation: males display a black crown with the forecrown heavily dotted with orange-red or red spots, while females possess a solid black crown entirely covered with white spots. The upperparts are mostly olive-brown, contrasted by a pale cream or buff underpart covered with dense, dark brown transverse barring. The tail is short and stiff, blackish in color with bold white patches on the central and outer feathers, aiding in stability while climbing vertical substrates.

Geographical distribution: This bird is endemic to the southern portion of the Atlantic Forest biome in South America. Its distribution range extends across southeastern Brazil (from the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro southward to Rio Grande do Sul), into eastern Paraguay, and the far northeastern corner of Argentina, mainly restricted to the province of Misiones and northern Corrientes.

Habitat: It primarily colonizes the understory and mid-story of humid subtropical and tropical forests, secondary growth forests, forest edges, dense scrublands, and areas dominated by bamboo stands. This species successfully adapted to both lowland and foothill ecosystems, ranging from sea level up to elevations of approximately 800 meters.

Feeding: It is an obligate insectivore whose diet consists of ants, beetles, larvae, wasps, and other small invertebrates hidden beneath the bark. To forage, it meticulously taps, pries, and pecks on thin twigs, vines, and dry bamboo stems, utilizing its sharp, chisel-like bill to open small holes and extracting prey with its specialized, long, and sticky tongue.

Behavior: Highly active and acrobatic, this bird moves rapidly through dense vegetation, foraging alone, in pairs, or frequently joining mixed-species flocks of the forest understory. It prefers to forage on extremely thin branches, often hanging upside down to inspect the undersides of leaves and twigs. Its drumming is remarkably soft, producing a delicate tapping sound that is barely audible from a distance, which is often accompanied by high-pitched, thin tsip-like vocalizations.

Nesting: Breeding activity occurs mostly between October and January. The pair excavates a small nest cavity in decaying, soft wood of dead branches or standing dead stumps, typically located between 1.5 and 6 meters above the ground. The entrance hole is tiny, tailored precisely to their body size. The clutch usually consists of 2 to 4 glossy white eggs, which are incubated by both parents for a period of 12 to 14 days. Both adults share the duties of brooding and feeding the altricial nestlings until they fledge.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although its population is considered stable, the species faces potential long-term threats due to severe habitat fragmentation and deforestation affecting the Atlantic Forest ecosystem.
