Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Stands out among its family due to its robust silhouette and a remarkably large, heavy, bright yellow to orange bill. This charismatic larid has a body length ranging from 38 to 43 centimeters and a wingspan that can reach up to 95 centimeters. Its plumage displays a striking contrast: a jet-black cap that extends below the eyes during the breeding season, a white forehead in non-breeding plumage, and dark slate-gray upperparts. The underparts are entirely white. In flight, it reveals a highly diagnostic tricolored wing pattern characterized by black primaries, white secondaries, and gray coverts, which facilitates distant identification. Its legs are short and range in color from olive-gray to dull yellow.

Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed across South America, east of the Andes. Its presence is common in the major river basins of the continent, spanning countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. Although it is mostly a sedentary resident in tropical regions, populations at the northern and southern extremes of its range undertake seasonal migratory movements driven by rainfall patterns and river level fluctuations.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits inland freshwater ecosystems. It is highly characteristic of large tropical and subtropical rivers, especially those featuring expansive seasonal sandbars. It also frequents inland lakes, swampy lagoons, reservoirs, and, less frequently, brackish estuaries and coastal mangroves during the rainy season or during dispersive movements, generally avoiding the open sea.

Feeding: Has a primarily piscivorous diet, based on consuming small fish captured near the water surface. It complements its diet with aquatic and flying insects, which it catches mid-air with great agility. Its most common hunting technique consists of low- to medium-altitude patrol flights, followed by a rapid plunge-dive, partially submerging to seize its prey with its powerful bill.

Behavior: Exhibits strongly gregarious habits, forming flocks to feed, roost, and breed. It is commonly observed perched on floating logs or resting on exposed sandbars, often in the company of other waterbirds such as the black skimmer (Rynchops niger). Its flight is strong and direct, distinguished by slow but deep wingbeats. It possesses a harsh, raspy vocal repertoire, emitting noisy calls when defending its territory or interacting with conspecifics.

Nesting: The reproductive process is strictly synchronized with the low-water season of rivers, when extensive sandbars emerge. It nests in dense colonies, which are often multispecific. The nest consists of a simple scrape excavated directly into the clean sand, devoid of vegetation. The typical clutch consists of 2 to 3 eggs, which exhibit a cryptic olive or sandy coloration with dark spots to blend in with the surroundings. Both parents share incubation duties, which last about 20 to 24 days, as well as the active defense of the nest territory against potential predators.

Conservation status: Is classified under the Least Concern (LC) category according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Although it maintains a stable global population and an extremely wide distribution range, it faces significant threats at local levels. These include the alteration of river dynamics by hydroelectric dam construction, which permanently floods its nesting sites, heavy metal pollution like mercury from mining activities, and unregulated human and livestock disturbance on nesting beaches.
