Description


Characterized by its diminutive size and striking sexual dimorphism, this small passerine measures approximately 11 to 12 centimeters in length and weighs around 14 grams. The adult male displays a glossy violaceous-blue upperparts coloration that contrasts dramatically with the bright orange-yellow underparts and forehead patch. In contrast, females and immature individuals present a much duller, cryptic plumage, featuring olive-green upperparts and pale yellowish-green underparts. The bill is short, stout, and dark, specifically adapted for a specialized diet, complemented by dark greyish legs and feet.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a vast range across northern and eastern South America. It is natively found throughout Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, the Guianas, and across extensive regions of Brazil, particularly within the Amazon basin and the Atlantic Forest biome. Its geographic distribution extends southward into eastern Paraguay and reaches its southernmost limit in northeastern Argentina, specifically within the humid forests of the Misiones province.

Habitat: Prefers the canopy and borders of humid lowland forests, secondary growth forests, and clearings. It is highly adaptable to human-modified landscapes, frequently inhabiting citrus orchards, shade-grown coffee plantations, suburban parks, and mature gardens. It thrives in areas where canopy structure is maintained, allowing access to a variety of epiphytic plants and fruit-producing trees.

Feeding: Exhibits a highly specialized frugivorous diet, relying heavily on the berries of mistletoes, particularly from the family Loranthaceae and the genus Phoradendron. Its digestive system is adapted to process these sticky fruits rapidly, voiding the seeds intact, which makes this species an essential seed disperser for parasitic plants. It also consumes small fruits from epiphytic cacti, wild figs (Ficus), and occasionally supplements its diet with small invertebrates and caterpillars gleaned from leaves.

Behavior: Displays an active, energetic temperament, frequently moving through the foliage in pairs or small family groups, often joining mixed-species feeding flocks with other tanagers and honeycreepers. This species is famous for its complex vocalizations, notably its ability to perform high-fidelity vocal mimicry of other bird species, which it incorporates into its own territorial songs. The natural song is a lively, rapid series of metallic chirps, whistles, and trills.

Nesting: The breeding season initiates with the construction of a unique dome-shaped nest with a side entrance. Both sexes participate in building this structure using moss, dry leaves, fine rootlets, and spiderwebs, concealing it masterfully in tree cavities, clay banks, or dense epiphytic growth. The female typically lays a clutch of 3 to 4 eggs, which are creamy white adorned with reddish-brown speckles. Incubation is performed solely by the female for about 13 to 14 days, after which both parents actively participate in feeding the altricial chicks via regurgitation until they fledge.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. While localized populations face threats from habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and illegal trapping for the wild bird trade due to its attractive song, its extensive geographical range and ability to tolerate disturbed habitats ensure that the global population remains stable.
