Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a small, highly active passerine bird belonging to the Thraupidae family, easily recognized by its contrasting color patterns and slender, elegant silhouette. It measures approximately 13 to 14 centimeters (about 5 inches) in length and weighs between 14 and 17 grams. The adult male features a striking, bright orange-yellow head and throat, which stands out sharply against its grayish-olive upperparts and whitish-buff to pale gray underparts, fading to a cleaner white on the belly. Females are noticeably duller and more uniform, displaying a pale yellow or olive-yellow head rather than bright orange, with overall olive-greenish upperparts. Both sexes share a slender, pointed dark gray bill, dark brown irises, and slender, lead-grey legs.

Geographical distribution: It occupies a vast geographical range across South America, showing a widespread distribution east of the Andes. It is native to eastern Ecuador and Peru, and extends widely across central, northeastern, and southeastern Brazil, reaching southward into eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, where some populations exhibit seasonal movements during the southern winter.

Habitat: It occurs in a wide variety of wooded and shrubby habitats, generally at lower elevations below 1,500 meters above sea level. Its typical environments include gallery forests, semideciduous woodlands, forest edges, second-growth scrub, and dry biomes such as the Chaco and Caatinga. It has also adapted remarkably well to human-modified landscapes, frequently inhabiting suburban parks, orchards, and mature residential gardens.

Feeding: Its diet is omnivorous and highly opportunistic, consisting of a diverse mix of animal and plant matter. It actively searches for small invertebrates such as caterpillars, spiders, beetles, and small winged insects, gleaning them from leaf surfaces or small twigs. To complement its protein intake, it feeds extensively on small fleshy fruits, berries, and nectar from tubular flowers, which it probes with its specialized, needle-like bill.

Behavior: This diurnal species is characterized by its restless, energetic nature, rarely staying still for long. It is most often observed in pairs or small family parties, and it is a common, nuclear member of mixed-species foraging flocks moving through the canopy and subcanopy. It performs constant tail-flicking and acrobatic hops among outer branches, maintaining contact with its group through high-pitched, thin chirps and soft call notes.

Nesting: The breeding behavior of this species involves the construction of a neat, open-cup nest built in the fork of a branch, usually hidden in dense foliage or low shrubbery. The nest is woven using dry grasses, plant fibers, rootlets, and spider webs to ensure stability. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 pale blue or white eggs, speckled with brownish and grayish spots near the larger end. Incubation is carried out primarily by the female for about 12 to 14 days, after which both parents share the duties of feeding and protecting the nestlings.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This assessment is justified by its extensive range of occurrence, its stable population trend, and its remarkable ability to tolerate habitat fragmentation and colonize secondary forests and suburban green spaces.
