Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a medium-sized, elegant passerine bird with a slender yet compact body, measuring between 13.5 and 14 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 11.5 to 15 grams. The upperparts are predominantly dark olive-gray, which darkens significantly on the crown to a nearly uniform sooty black coloration. A highly conspicuous, pale buffish to cream-colored supercilium runs from the base of the bill back above the eye, contrasting sharply with a dark transocular stripe. The throat is a clean, contrasting white, whereas the breast and flanks are washed with a delicate buff-pinkish hue that fades into a yellowish-white tone on the center of the belly. Its legs are notably long and exhibit a pale pinkish-flesh coloration, a morphological specialization suited for navigating wet, slippery substrates. Sexual dimorphism is virtually non-existent, as both males and females share the same plumage patterns throughout the year.

Geographical distribution: This species is patchily distributed across several distinct regions of South America. Its primary range encompasses southeastern Brazil (from Bahia and Minas Gerais south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina (specifically restricted to the Misiones province). Disjunct populations also occur across the Amazon Basin and the Guiana Shield—often associated with distinct subspecies such as Myiothlypis rivularis mesoleuca and Myiothlypis rivularis boliviana—extending its range into eastern Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and the Andean foothills of Peru and Bolivia.

Habitat: It is strictly associated with freshwater aquatic ecosystems situated within dense, humid forest environments. It preferentially occupies the margins of fast-flowing streams, medium-sized forest rivers, swampy woodlands, and well-preserved gallery forests. It requires habitats with dense understory cover, exposed rocks, wet mudbanks, and fallen logs directly adjacent to the water. The species rarely ventures more than a few yards away from the water´s edge, exhibiting an extreme ecological specialization for lowland riparian zones, generally occurring below 1000 meters above sea level.

Feeding: The diet is exclusively insectivorous, consisting of a wide variety of small invertebrates. It actively searches for food at ground level, scanning wet leaf litter, damp soil, mossy rocks, and organic debris accumulated along the riverbanks. Its prey includes arthropods such as small beetles, flies, ants, spiders, aquatic insect larvae, and tiny riparian crustaceans. Foraging techniques involve quick hops, precise pecks on wet surfaces, and occasional short aerial sallies to capture active, flying insects near the water.

Behavior: It is a remarkably active and restless bird, constantly moving along the margins of waterways. A highly characteristic behavioral trait is its constant tail-wagging, pumping its tail up and down and occasionally waving it from side to side while slightly fanning the rectrices. It is typically observed in pairs or small family groups, vigorously defending linear territories along streams. Its vocalizations are exceptionally loud and musical; the territorial song begins with several sharp, deliberate notes that rapidly accelerate into a descending, ringing trill that easily cuts through the ambient sound of rushing water.

Nesting: Breeding activities take place during the spring and summer months, corresponding to the period of peak invertebrate abundance. It constructs a bulky, domed nest with a side entrance, using locally gathered materials such as dead leaves, fine twigs, moss, plant fibers, and rootlets. The nest is typically hidden in steep earthen banks, within cavities among the exposed roots of riverside trees, or under rocky overhangs just above the water level. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 3 white or cream-colored eggs, which are heavily speckled with reddish-brown spots concentrated at the larger end. Incubation is performed primarily by the female, although both parents actively participate in feeding the nestlings and defending the nest site.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although it has a large overall distribution, local populations are facing moderate declines due to the fragmentation of mature forests, water pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial waste, and the physical alteration or canalization of natural riverbanks, which severely degrades the highly specialized riparian ecosystems on which this bird depends.
