Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by an elegant and slender silhouette, this medium-sized seabird measures approximately 36 to 41 centimeters in length with a wingspan ranging from 98 to 110 centimeters. During the breeding season, adults display a striking jet-black hood that contrasts sharply with white crescent-shaped markings around the eyes. The mantle and upper wings are a deep slate gray, while the neck, underparts, and tail are pure white. Their bill is a dark reddish-maroon color, often with a blackish tip, and the legs are dark reddish to black. In non-breeding plumage, the dark hood is lost, replaced by a white head with a diffuse grayish-brown smudge behind the eyes, and the bill turns dusky.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the Americas. Its breeding range extends from the Maritime Provinces of Canada and the eastern seaboard of the United States, continuing down through the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean islands. During the non-breeding season, northern populations migrate south, reaching the coasts of Central America, northern South America (including Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador), and occasionally as far south as northern Brazil and Peru.

Habitat: Primarily frequents coastal and marine ecosystems within temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions. It is highly abundant in salt marshes, estuaries, sandy beaches, coastal lagoons, bays, and mangrove swamps. While it favors saltwater environments, it regularly ventures inland to human-altered habitats near the coast, such as fishing harbors, landfills, agricultural fields, and parking lots where food resources are plentiful.

Feeding: Exhibits a highly opportunistic and omnivorous diet, adapting its feeding strategies to available local resources. It feeds mainly on small fish, marine invertebrates (such as crabs and shrimp), insects, worms, and the eggs of horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus). In addition, it consumes carrion, organic refuse, and human food scraps. This species is well-known for kleptoparasitism, actively stealing food from other seabirds, particularly brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis), by landing on their heads or harassing them mid-air.

Behavior: Highly gregarious throughout the year, this bird forms large, active flocks for both foraging and roosting. Its common name is derived from its characteristic nasal, laughing call, a loud and rhythmic "ha-ha-ha-ha-hah" used for territorial defense and social communication. It possesses a strong, buoyant flight and is capable of agile aerial maneuvers to catch insects in flight or snatch food from the water´s surface.

Nesting: Occurs in dense, noisy colonies, often comprising thousands of breeding pairs, established on barrier islands, sand dunes, or elevated salt marsh areas. The nest is a well-constructed cup made of grasses, reeds, and seaweed, built directly on the ground or within low vegetation to protect it from high tides. The female typically lays 3 olive to buff-colored eggs marked with dark brown spots. Both parents share incubation duties for 20 to 23 days and cooperatively feed the semi-precocial chicks, which fledge approximately 35 days after hatching.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, owing to its extensive geographical range and stable or increasing global population trends. Nonetheless, local populations face threats from coastal development, habitat degradation, plastic pollution, oil spills, and human disturbance at key nesting colonies.
