Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to a specialized group of Neotropical passerine birds within the Furnariidae family, recognized by its cryptic plumage and strong affinity for marshland ecosystems. This medium-sized ovenbird measures approximately 14 to 15 centimeters in total length. Its upperparts are predominantly olive-brown, while the underparts feature a pale grayish breast transitioning into a whitish belly. The most defining diagnostic feature is a small, distinct sulphur-yellow throat patch, which stands out against its overall muted coloration. A prominent whitish to pale yellow supercilium arches over the eye, complemented by a slightly streaked dark crown. The wings feature conspicuous, bright rufous-yellowish coverts, a coloration that is mirrored on its graduated, soft-tipped tail. Its bill is relatively long, slender, and straight with a pinkish-flesh colored lower mandible, perfectly adapted for probing dense aquatic vegetation.

Geographical distribution: Occurs strictly in the temperate zones of southeastern South America, with its range encompassing eastern Argentina (mostly in the provinces of Buenos Aires, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, Corrientes, and eastern La Pampa), the entirety of Uruguay, and the southernmost tip of Brazil, where it is restricted to the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Habitat: Restricted almost entirely to freshwater wetlands, including swamps, marshes, flooded grasslands, and the margins of lagoons dominated by dense emergent vegetation. It shows a strong preference for reedbeds dominated by rushes of the genera Schoenoplectus and Typha, as well as tall grasses and riparian scrub where shallow water is present year-round or semi-permanently.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous, consisting of a wide variety of small arthropods associated with wetland flora. It feeds on beetle larvae, spiders, flies, moths, and small hymenopterans, which it extracts by actively gleaning from the stems of rushes, floating leaves, and organic debris accumulated at the water line.

Behavior: Displays highly secretive and skulking habits, making it exceptionally difficult to observe directly as it rarely flies long distances or emerges into open areas. It moves agilely through the vertical stems of reeds, climbing and hopping with quick, jerky movements while frequently cocking and shaking its tail. Its presence is most readily detected by its distinctive vocalization, which is a rapid, accelerating, and descending trill delivered from deep within the vegetation.

Nesting: Breeding activities take place during the southern spring and summer, generally spanning from October to February. The species constructs a bulky, dome-shaped or globular nest made of tightly interwoven dry reeds, grass blades, and plant fibers. This complex structure is securely lashed vertically to several standing reed stems, typically situated at a height of 0.5 to 1.2 meters directly above the water level. The nest features a side entrance, often with a downward-pointing tunnel to deter predators, and the inner chamber is lined with softer plant down. The female typically lays 3 to 4 immaculate white eggs, which are incubated by both parents.

Conservation status: Listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Nevertheless, its localized populations are highly vulnerable to habitat degradation. Major threats include wetland drainage, agricultural expansion, overgrazing by cattle in riparian zones, and pollution of freshwater bodies, which fragment the continuous marshes this specialized bird relies upon for survival.
