Description

Features a robust, heavy body with a wingspan ranging from 45 to 61 mm, dominated by a coloration of dark brown to olive-brown. The forewings are adorned with a distinctive series of semi-hyaline, yellowish-white spots arranged in a diagonal band, while the hindwings feature a straight, neat row of three to five translucent spots. Their large, prominent eyes have a deep reddish-brown hue, aiding in rapid flight navigation. The caterpillars are particularly striking, showcasing a translucent, pale green body through which the internal organs, including the beating dorsal vessel, are clearly visible, topped by a large, pale orange or yellowish head decorated with dark markings on the sides.

Geographical distribution: Occurs extensively throughout the Americas, spanning from the southern United States, particularly in states like Florida and Texas (with migratory flights reaching as far north as New England and southern Canada), extending south through Mexico, the Caribbean islands, and Central America, down to deep South America, reaching as far south as central Argentina and Uruguay.

Habitat: Strongly associated with open, humid, and warm ecosystems, frequently occurring in subtropical and tropical zones. It is highly adapted to human-modified landscapes, commonly inhabiting residential gardens, urban parks, commercial nurseries, agricultural borders, and wetland edges where its primary host plants are cultivated or grow naturally.

Feeding: During the larval stage, this lepidopteran is a strict specialist, feeding primarily on the foliage of the family Cannaceae, especially Canna indica and its hybrid cultivars, and occasionally on species of Marantaceae and Heliconiaceae. The adult butterflies are nectarivorous, utilizing their extraordinarily long proboscis to access deep corollas of flowering plants such as Lantana, Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, and various other tubular flowers that offer high sugar content.

Behavior: Exhibits an exceptionally fast, darting, and powerful flight pattern typical of its family. Adults are strictly diurnal, active during periods of intense sunlight. The larvae exhibit remarkable architectural behavior: they construct protective shelters by cutting and folding the margins of host plant leaves, securing them with tough silk threads. To prevent detection by predators and parasitoids, they employ a specialized defense mechanism involving the ballistic ejection of frass, firing their fecal pellets several feet away from their shelters.

Reproduction: The lifecycle initiates when the female oviposits single, dome-shaped eggs of a pale pink or greenish tint on either the upper or lower surface of host leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae progress through five distinct instars, feeding voraciously. Pupation takes place inside the rolled-leaf shelter, where the caterpillar transforms into a greenish-white pupa characterized by a conspicuous, elongated proboscis sheath extending beyond the wing cases, anchored securely by a silken girdle. This rapid developmental cycle can be completed in approximately 30 to 40 days depending on ambient temperatures.

Conservation status: Has not been evaluated globally by the IUCN Red List. Due to its expansive geographic range, abundance, and adaptability to urbanized areas where ornamental plants are cultivated, it is generally considered secure and of least concern from a conservation perspective, often being classified as a minor agricultural and horticultural pest instead.
