Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belonging to the tyrant flycatcher family, this small-sized passerine measures approximately 5.1 to 5.9 inches in length and weighs between 11 and 15 grams. Its dorsal plumage is characterized by a dull olive-green to olive-gray coloration, which contrasts with a slightly darker crown that conceals an indistinct, rarely visible white crown patch. It features a narrow but conspicuous whitish eye-ring. The wings are adorned with two to three prominent whitish or pale gray wing bars, formed by the tips of the wing coverts. Its throat and breast display a pale grayish hue, transitioning into a yellowish-white coloration on the belly and undertail coverts. The most defining diagnostic feature of Elaenia parvirostris is its notably small and narrow bill, which has a pinkish or flesh-colored base on the lower mandible and a dark tip.

Geographical distribution: It functions as a long-distance austral migrant within South America. During the southern hemisphere´s summer breeding season, it occupies areas in central and northern Argentina, Uruguay, central and southern Paraguay, and southern Brazil. During the autumn, it undertakes a significant northward migration to spend the non-breeding season in the Amazon Basin, northern Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela, occasionally reaching southern Caribbean islands such as Trinidad and Tobago.

Habitat: This bird occupies a diverse range of wooded and scrubby environments. In its breeding grounds, it prefers open woodlands, dense shrublands, gallery forests, forest edges, urban parks, and domestic gardens. During migration and wintering, it successfully adapts to wooded savannas, secondary growth forests, coastal restingas, and dry lowland forests, generally avoiding the dark interior of dense primary rainforests, preferring the mid-to-high canopy levels.

Feeding: Classified as an omnivore, its diet consists of a balanced combination of insects and small fruits. It actively forages among foliage, executing short sallying flights to capture aerial prey or gleaning directly from leaves and twigs. Its prey includes beetles, flies, ants, and small wasps. Additionally, it plays an important ecological role as a seed disperser, consuming various small berries, especially those from the Loranthaceae and Melastomataceae families.

Behavior: It is a highly active and energetic species, usually encountered singly, in pairs, or joining mixed-species flocks during the migration period. It exhibits a restless temperament, frequently flicking its wings and tail as it moves through the branches. Vocalization is crucial for its identification; its voice consists of a dry, descending, scratchy whistle, often described as a soft "fio-fio" or a sharp, short chirp used to maintain contact and assert territorial boundaries.

Nesting: The breeding period occurs from October to January. It builds a neat, cup-shaped nest using fine plant fibers, rootlets, lichens, and mosses, bound together with spiderwebs and anchored to the fork of a horizontal branch, typically at medium heights. The cup is warmly lined with soft feathers. The female lays 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs, speckled with reddish-brown and gray spots, primarily concentrated around the larger end. While the female performs most of the incubation, both parents actively cooperate in feeding and defending the chicks.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The species maintains a vast geographical distribution range and a stable global population. However, localized populations face threats from habitat fragmentation and deforestation within both its breeding grounds and critical stopover sites along its extensive migration corridors.
